Man, 28, Died in Car Accident After Leaving Best Friend’s Wedding to ‘Get a Phone Charger’

A young architect from London, Daniel Rjabcevs, tragically lost his life in a car accident while attending his best friend’s wedding in Albania. The incident unfolded shortly after Daniel, 28, left the wedding venue on June 6, 2023, in search of a phone charger. His brother, Vlad Merkulovs, described the heartbreaking moment when the family came to terms with the devastating news.

Vlad shared that Daniel had travelled from the UK to Albania on June 4 to celebrate the union of his close friend. However, his decision to briefly step away from the festivities for a phone charger led to a fatal misfortune. Concern began to mount among guests when Daniel failed to return after several hours and could not be reached by phone.

Vlad, 34, explained that calls were made to Daniel’s phone, but there was no response. In a state of anxiety, wedding attendees decided to contact the authorities, leading to the revelation that Daniel had been in a serious car crash.

“It was a catastrophic accident,” Vlad recounted, revealing the grim details of the incident. “My brother’s car, the little Fiat, was smashed from both sides, so there was no chance of survival.” Daniel sustained catastrophic injuries that included multiple fractures and severe brain trauma. He was rushed to the hospital, where emergency surgery was performed in an attempt to save his life.

Despite the medical team’s efforts, Daniel’s condition remained critical, and he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Vlad expressed the unimaginable grief felt by their family, highlighting the profound impact Daniel’s loss would have on their lives. “It’s a devastating tragedy that changed our family’s life forever. Our family is heartbroken,” he said.

Describing the bond he shared with Daniel, Vlad revealed the depth of their relationship, saying, “I was his older brother, and I treated him like he was my son. He wasn’t just my brother; he was a godfather to my little girl.” The emotional toll of the tragedy has left the family grappling with their sorrow.

Plans are underway to transport Daniel’s body from Albania to Latvia, where the family’s roots lie, for funeral services. In light of the financial implications following this sudden loss, Vlad has taken to crowdfunding, launching a GoFundMe campaign to help alleviate some of the costs associated with the funeral and other expenses.

“We are raising funds to help cover funeral expenses, travel costs for family members, legal and administrative expenses, and other unexpected costs resulting from this tragedy,” Vlad stated on the fundraising page. He added that any support, regardless of size, would aid the family during this difficult time.

As the family mourns, they are also seeking clarity regarding the circumstances of the accident. Vlad has expressed a commitment to pursue answers from local Albanian authorities. “As the investigation continues, our family remains committed to pursuing the truth and ensuring that Daniel’s case receives the attention it deserves,” he wrote in an update to his fundraising page.

At present, the Albanian State Police have not provided any comments regarding the ongoing investigation. Daniel’s untimely passing has created a significant void not only within his family but also in the lives of those who knew him, as he was remembered for his kindness and positive spirit. As the family navigates this profound loss, they hope to honour Daniel’s memory while seeking accountability and support in their time of need.
