A California man has been charged with murder following the tragic death of his estranged wife, Maria Liliana Vanegas Parra, last week. The incident occurred on June 11 at a residence in San Jose, where authorities discovered the 45-year-old woman suffering from numerous stab wounds. Her estranged partner, 46-year-old Pablo Aguileramora, was also found at the scene with self-inflicted injuries.

According to the Santa Clara District Attorney’s Office, both individuals were transported to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, Vanegas Parra did not survive her injuries. In what proved to be her final moments, she identified Aguileramora as her attacker, providing investigators with a critical piece of evidence. Authorities also reported that Aguileramora is accused of threatening the witness who alerted emergency services regarding the attack.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stabbing revealed a troubling history of harassment. Aguileramora had previously been charged with stalking Vanegas Parra in March 2023. Allegations included slashing her car tyres and surreptitiously placing three tracking devices on her vehicle. He reportedly sent her over 100 text messages and voicemails, and even showed up at her workplace uninvited.
Although he was released following the stalking charge, the courts had issued an emergency protective order against him at the request of Vanegas Parra. The DA’s office has refrained from disclosing whether Aguileramora has made any formal pleas to the charges of murder and stalking, as he is currently represented by a public defender whose comments have not yet been made available.
Friends and family members have expressed their sorrow over the loss of Vanegas Parra, who was described as a devoted mother with a passion for life. She loved spending time at the beach and frequently enjoyed sharing wine and insights with loved ones. A GoFundMe page set up in her honour highlighted her joyful spirit and dreams for the future, while aiming to assist her family in arranging for her remains to be returned to her home country of Colombia.
In light of this tragic case, many are highlighting the importance of addressing domestic violence. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available for those who may be experiencing similar situations, providing confidential support around the clock in over 170 languages.
As the investigation continues, Aguileramora faces serious charges that could have long-lasting implications for both himself and Vanegas Parra’s grieving family. The District Attorney’s Office has been vocal about their commitment to pursuing justice in this disturbing case.
The community is left grappling with the aftermath of this tragic incident, calling into question the effectiveness of protective measures designed to safeguard individuals in volatile domestic situations. The case serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive interventions to protect victims of domestic abuse.
As proceedings unfold, the focus will be on seeking justice for Maria Liliana Vanegas Parra and instigating a broader dialogue about domestic violence awareness and prevention strategies.
