In an official statement shared on Instagram, Tibet House US expressed its sorrow, stating: “We are deeply saddened to announce that Robert A.F. Thurman, prominent American Buddhist scholar, co-founder of Tibet House US, author and translator whose teachings shaped countless lives, died Tuesday morning.” The post was adorned with the Tibetan Buddhist mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum,” signifying compassion and reverence.

Thurman’s family has requested privacy during this difficult time. Following the news of his passing, numerous individuals from the academic and spiritual communities paid tribute to his legacy, highlighting his significant contributions to the understanding of Tibetan Buddhism. Meditation teacher Ben Decker remarked, “A giant has left the stage. Robert Thurman helped build a bridge between the wisdom of Tibet and the modern world without sacrificing depth, rigor, humour, or humanity.”

Renowned for his work, Robert Thurman served as the Jey Tsong Khapa Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University for three decades, retiring in 2020. He gained recognition as a leading American expert in Tibetan Buddhism and was acknowledged by TIME magazine as one of the 25 most influential Americans in 1997.
Co-founding Tibet House US in 1987, Thurman aimed to serve as a hub for the preservation and promotion of Tibetan culture. His approach to Buddhism emphasised the importance of individualism, nonviolence, education, altruism, and egalitarianism—principles that he believed exemplified Tibet’s unique cultural identity. In a statement on his website, he remarked, “Thanks to the Tibetan people, especially their living saviour, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his various emanations, I have found basic sanity in my lifelong quest.”
Thurman’s dedication to preserving Tibetan culture was evident not only in his academic pursuits but also in his advocacy for Tibet’s rights. In interviews, he frequently addressed the duality of his life as both a scholar and a father, expressing that he saw no contradiction in his associations with Hollywood figures, including his daughter Uma. “Though I do have different sides and am still a highly imperfect individual, I don’t see any dichotomy between aspiring to practice Buddhist virtues… and having good friends, whether famous or not,” he stated in an interview.
Robert was married to Nena Thurman, Uma’s mother, from 1967 until his death. Together, they raised three children: Ganden, Dechen, and Mipam Thurman. He was also previously married to Christophe de Menil, a noted heiress and costume designer, with whom he had a daughter, Taya Thurman.
As the news of his passing spreads, it is clear that Robert A.F. Thurman leaves behind a remarkable legacy, not only in the field of Buddhist studies but also in the cultural fabric of America. He shaped the understanding of Tibetan Buddhism for many and contributed greatly to the dialogue around compassion and ethical living. His family, friends, and numerous students will undoubtedly carry forward his teachings and the principles he so passionately advocated.
The impact of his work resonates through the community he helped build at Tibet House US and beyond, marking his role as a bridge between ancient wisdom and contemporary society. While Robert Thurman may have departed this world, his contributions to spirituality and education ensure that his influence will endure for generations to come.
