A recent incident aboard a JetBlue flight has rapidly gained attention after a passenger’s son captured footage of a rodent scurrying near the overhead bin. The event occurred during a journey from Los Angeles to New York City, with passengers en route to Turks and Caicos. Brittney Brimway, who was travelling with her two children, reported the sighting which took place approximately four hours into the flight on June 12.

Brimway described the moment to PEOPLE, stating that she was awakened by her 13-year-old son after he noticed the animal moving around the blue light fixtures above them. She expressed feelings of shock and disgust, ultimately prompting her son to document the incident by recording a video of the unexpected guest.

The footage was subsequently shared on Instagram, where it quickly went viral, accumulating over one million views. In her post, Brimway detailed her disbelief, exclaiming, “You can’t make this s— up! Our first class with @jetblue had a rat YES a RAT in the overhead bin!!!” She also included the hashtag “Mint,” which refers to JetBlue’s premium business class service.

In response to the concerning video, JetBlue reached out to Brimway through social media, asking for additional information including her confirmation code, name, and date of birth. Following this communication, Brimway confirmed that the airline had agreed to refund her flight.
JetBlue has since issued a statement addressing the incident, asserting that while occurrences of this nature are uncommon, customer safety and comfort remain paramount. The airline indicated that the aircraft involved has been removed from service for thorough inspection and cleaning.
This recent sighting is not isolated; there have been previous incidents of rodents becoming uninvited passengers on commercial flights. Notably, in December of the previous year, a rat was spotted on a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight headed to Aruba. Footage from that incident revealed the animal navigating the cabin, much like the recent occurrence on JetBlue. A representative from KLM described the event as “very exceptional,” assuring that the aircraft was thoroughly cleaned before returning to service.
Brimway’s experience has sparked discussions regarding safety and hygiene standards on flights, raising questions about how such incidents can occur. While airlines regularly conduct cleaning and maintenance of their aircraft, the presence of wildlife poses a unique challenge, particularly in the confined space of an airplane.
The airline industry must continue to address these types of incidents proactively to maintain customer confidence. As the travel sector seeks to recover from the impacts of the pandemic, ensuring a safe and pleasant journey for all passengers is critical. Awareness and vigilance will undoubtedly play a crucial role in preventing similar occurrences in the future.
As public interest continues to grow regarding in-flight cleanliness and passenger safety, JetBlue and other airlines may need to reassess their operational protocols. With travel becoming increasingly popular, incidents like these must be handled swiftly to uphold the reputation of the airline and ensure the comfort of their passengers.
Brimway’s unsettling flight experience highlights the ongoing need for heightened focus on hygiene and safety within the aviation sector. As stories like hers emerge, the industry must strive to adapt and respond adequately to maintain passenger trust in air travel.
