Designer Galey Alix has recently completed an extensive two-year renovation of her Florida home, a project that has become a profound journey of healing and self-discovery. Alix, who gained recognition as a star on HGTV’s *Home in a Heartbeat*, has collaborated with Minted to unveil her new studio, a space that embodies her growth after leaving Wall Street to pursue a career in design.

The designer’s personal journey has been marked by significant emotional challenges. In 2018, just as Alix was finalising renovations on what she envisioned as her dream home in Connecticut, her relationship with her fiancé came to an end. Compounding her struggles, Alix faced serious health issues relating to an eating disorder, alongside the loss of her job in finance. These hurdles prompted a return to Florida, where Alix began to rebuild her life and career.

Alix’s home renovation began as a DIY project but has since evolved into a successful design business. Despite experiencing debilitating stress from her HGTV series, which did not return for a second season, Alix has continued to thrive as a designer through her own company, Galey Alix Design. However, the task of renovating her own home proved to be an emotionally charged undertaking, bringing to surface memories of past traumas.
“The last time I worked on my own home, it was a painful experience,” Alix reflected. “The relationship I was in fell apart, and it was a traumatic time for me.” To further complicate matters, shortly after commencing the renovation of her current home, Alix lost her beloved dog, Hatcher, with whom she had shared 14 years of companionship.
Following a period of mourning, Alix found the strength to immerse herself in the renovation project. She has created a home that reflects not only her design sensibilities but also honours the memory of her late pet. “It’s been a really emotional journey, filled with both happy and sad moments. Completing this space helps me feel a sense of triumph over some of the past upheavals,” she explained.
The studio was the final space to be transformed, marked by a significant emotional weight. Alix admitted to feeling anxious about its completion, longing to do it justice. She noted, “Although I’m a trained designer now, my background as a Wall Street executive has made me somewhat insecure about my qualifications compared to traditional designers.”
In a fortunate twist, Minted approached Alix with the idea of collaborating on the studio’s design. “Receiving their invitation was the push I needed to focus back on my home and finally wrap up this chapter of my life,” she shared. The studio is a vibrant showcase of Alix’s creativity, featuring a gallery wall adorned with her collection of black-and-white photography—an element she passionately incorporates into her designs.
Alix explained her philosophy regarding the use of photography in home decor: “For me, black-and-white images allow for a cohesive aesthetic. When using colour photographs, it’s often difficult to ensure they all harmonise within the same colour scheme.” She emphasised the importance of selecting images that hold personal significance rather than merely matching a decor style.
Now, with the studio complete, Alix feels an immense sense of pride in her new workspace, a testimony to her professional skills and aesthetic vision. “Every time I log onto Zoom, I’m proud of my background. It reflects the level of design I can deliver, especially as I engage in deals with notable hotel chains and celebrities.”
As Alix looks toward the future, she is excited about her forthcoming book, *You Can Do Beautiful Things*, set to be released soon. In it, she offers design tips and insights into her personal and professional journey, intertwining her experiences with practical advice for readers.
“I feel relieved and accomplished for having focused on my own home,” Galey remarked. “Now, I can truly embrace who I am and what I am doing professionally.” This completed studio stands as a monument to her resilience, a creative refuge that celebrates both her past and future endeavours. With several exciting projects on the horizon, Alix is eager to continue this new chapter in her design journey.
