A 52-year-old woman tragically lost her life after being struck by a large boulder while hiking in Southern California’s San Bernardino National Forest on Sunday, June 14. The victim has been identified as Lillian Rodriguez, a resident of Redlands, California.
Emergency services were alerted at 3:14 p.m. local time, after reports indicated an accident had occurred on a popular trail near the 900 block of South Fork Road in Lytle Creek. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the calls to 911 described the woman’s situation as critical, suggesting she had been struck by either a falling tree branch or a rock.

Upon receiving the calls, a search and rescue team was dispatched to the remote location where Rodriguez was hiking near Bonita Falls. Rescue efforts faced significant challenges due to the terrain, requiring the team to navigate on foot for some distance before reaching the scene. Unfortunately, when they arrived, Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the location.

According to Jenny Smith, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, preliminary investigations revealed that Rodriguez had been near the waterfalls when she was hit by a large boulder that fell from the hillside. Smith expressed her condolences, noting, “Sadly, she did not survive.”
The incident has raised various accounts from witnesses. One such witness, Jose Reynaud, spoke to local news outlet Victor Valley News Group (VVNG) about his interaction with Rodriguez before the accident. He reported that he had seen her taking photos of the waterfall and trying to obtain a better viewpoint when the accident occurred. Reynaud claimed that she grabbed a branch to assist herself, which subsequently broke, leading to her fall where she struck her head on a rock.
As authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this terrible incident, both the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the California Highway Patrol have not provided further comments as of yet.
For hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, Bonita Falls presents an inviting challenge. The trail spans 1.8 miles and is classified as moderate in difficulty, according to AllTrails.com. However, those who frequent the area have been reminded that the path can become rocky and steep in certain sections, emphasising the importance of wearing suitable footwear.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in hiking and outdoor activities. Authorities are continuing their investigation to ascertain precise details surrounding the circumstances of Rodriguez’s death, and the wider hiking community is urged to adhere to safety recommendations while enjoying the natural beauty of the San Bernardino National Forest.
Family and friends of Rodriguez are likely grappling with the loss, as the hiking community mourns the passing of a fellow outdoor enthusiast. This incident highlights the unpredictability of nature and the need for utmost caution when exploring the wilderness.
As investigations unfold, the local community remains hopeful for measures that will enhance safety on popular hiking trails, ensuring that future visits to the stunning landscape do not result in such heartbreaking outcomes.
