Husband Hospitalized After Trying to Save Wife from Roaring House Fire, Neighbor Says

A tragic house fire in Glendale, Arizona, over the weekend has resulted in the death of a 76-year-old woman and left her husband in hospital with smoke inhalation. The incident occurred early on Sunday morning and is currently being investigated as an accidental fire.

According to José Miguel Santiago, a spokesperson for the Glendale Police Department, the husband was outside the home when first responders arrived. He had attempted to rescue his wife, Serlina Yuk-King Yee, but was unsuccessful in bringing her to safety.

Despite being rescued and taken to the hospital, Yee later succumbed to smoke inhalation injuries. Her husband, who has not been publicly identified, remains under medical care. Santiago confirmed that the couple lived together and both were in their 70s, hinting that they had faced some health difficulties.

A neighbour, Don McDowell, recounted the scene, stating that the elderly woman relied on a walker for mobility. “He was pretty mobile. The lady was on a walker and she was not in good physical condition at all,” McDowell remarked. He highlighted the husband’s desperate attempts to save his wife amidst the chaos of the fire.

Investigations into the cause of the blaze are ongoing, but preliminary reports from fire mitigation teams suggested that the fire may have originated from electrical sources near the centre of the house. Observers noted that the flames quickly spread, prompting concerns for nearby residences. Local resident Brandon Ojeda, a Marine Corps veteran, mentioned how swiftly the fire developed, saying, “That fire was spreading rapidly and that could have probably lit up this whole block.”

Ojeda, who witnessed the events unfold, recounted how he grabbed a fire extinguisher in a bid to assist before first responders took control of the situation. Reflecting on the incident, he expressed hope that community members would similarly come to one another’s aid in times of crisis.
