Woman, 21, Plummets 131 Feet to Her Death After Bungee Jump Staff Allegedly Forgot to Attach Safety Cord

A tragic incident in Brazil has left a community in shock following the death of a 21-year-old woman who fell from a bridge after allegedly not being secured properly for a bungee jump. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas plummeted approximately 40 metres (131 feet) from the Ponte do Esqueleto, or Skeleton Bridge, located in the municipality of Limeira, São Paulo, on Saturday, June 13.

According to reports, de Freitas was partaking in a bungee jumping experience when staff reportedly failed to attach her safety cord before she was propelled off the bridge. Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing moments leading up to her fall, with one individual filming the event and later stating, “Guys, the rope!” upon noticing the equipment left behind on the ground.

Emergency services were deployed, including a police helicopter, but unfortunately, de Freitas was pronounced dead at the scene. The young woman had graduated with a degree in physical education and sports management and was on a guided tour when she met her tragic fate. Hours before the incident, she purportedly joked on her Instagram Stories about the jump, asking, “Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?”

In connection with her death, six individuals have since been taken into custody. Three men were arrested at the scene and are facing serious charges, including homicide with implied malice, a legal term used when someone recklessly engages in dangerous actions that result in death or serious injury. The local authorities have stated that those involved were operating without proper regulation or approval.

Delegate Andrea Dantas Levy, who is overseeing the police investigation, has expressed concerns about safety protocols in place at the site. “They ended up organising this event, and this fatality happened today due to a failure to verify and supervise the placement of the rope on the victim’s jump,” he stated, signalling a possible negligence on the part of the event organisers.

Defence attorneys representing the accused have claimed that their clients are seasoned professionals within the industry and argued that this was an isolated incident, as the company had not experienced a fatality in several years. Nevertheless, the incident has prompted widespread scrutiny regarding safety measures and regulations at bungee jumping sites across Brazil.

In light of the tragic event, the City Council of Limeira has announced plans to file a complaint against the federal government. Mayor Murilo Félix highlighted the need for addressing safety and access to the federal area surrounding the bridge, which has been known to present risks for years without adequate protective measures in place.

The Civil Police of Brazil is conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the details surrounding de Freitas’s death and to determine accountability among those who organised the ill-fated jump.
