Anna, known as AnnaBytheFoot on social media, has shared her inspiring journey of defying expectations and challenging perceptions surrounding disabilities. Born without arms in Vietnam, Anna was adopted as a baby by a single mother in the United States, who is a physical therapist dedicated to supporting disabled children. The support Anna received from her mother shaped her strong sense of independence and determination to thrive despite the challenges she faced.

Anna’s mother has not only blessed Anna with a loving home, but she has also adopted six other children with varied physical and cognitive differences, fostering many more throughout the years. This nurturing environment ultimately helped instil a different perspective on disability in Anna, who recalls, “My mom had a very keen eye for how to instil independence in me.” From a young age, her mother encouraged her to learn how to accomplish tasks independently, instead of jumping in to assist at every opportunity.

Reflecting on her upbringing, Anna mentions her mother’s method of fostering resilience. “I remember asking her to put on my jacket, and she would say, ‘No, you need to figure it out yourself.’ Although I found it frustrating at the time, I appreciate that sentiment now,” she explained. This approach allowed Anna to navigate her environment creatively, ultimately leading her to discover her own capabilities, such as using her feet to perform actions other children might use their hands for.
In addition to fostering independence, Anna’s mother ensured that she received the necessary resources to thrive academically and socially. Anna benefited from the support of an occupational therapist and was continually encouraged to engage with peers while also being made aware of her needs regarding disability. She recalls, “My school knew about my disability, and they provided me with all the support I needed.”
A pivotal aspect of Anna’s childhood was her connection to the International Child Amputee Network, which her mother joined. The network allowed Anna to meet other children with limb differences, fostering a sense of community and belonging. “Seeing other people like you makes you feel very seen,” Anna remarked. Initially, she struggled with her own disability, often carrying shame. However, the support from others with similar experiences played a significant role in her acceptance.
Anna’s interactions within this supportive community led her to encounter a mentor – a significant figure who demonstrated various milestones Anna had once deemed unattainable. This mentor’s achievements, including driving and maintaining a fulfilling personal life, inspired both hope and aspirations within Anna. She noted, “I realised that it was possible for someone without arms to get married and lead a satisfying life.”
As she grew older, Anna began sharing her life on social media, launching her platforms under the username AnnaByTheFoot in early 2023. Her aim is to challenge misconceptions about disabilities while showcasing how she performs everyday tasks such as cooking and going out to eat, despite her limb difference. Since starting her social media journey, Anna has amassed over 70,000 followers, gaining both positive affirmation and discouraging reactions.
Despite being naturally private, Anna values the importance of vulnerability and authenticity. She acknowledged the initial fear she faced when deciding to share her life publicly. “Putting yourself out there is really hard. I was encouraged by those around me, and that support made a difference,” she said, highlighting the impact of a community rallying around her.
The feedback Anna receives often fuels her motivation to continue sharing her experiences. She spoke about one particular comment from a mother of a child with one hand: “She said, ‘I never thought my daughter would be able to cook.’” Positive comments like this reinforce for Anna that her decision to share her journey was right, demonstrating the need for visibility among those with disabilities.
Anna’s overarching goal is to showcase the diversity within the community of people with disabilities. While she understands that her content may educate viewers, she primarily wants to illustrate her life as she lives it. “People with disabilities are just as diverse as everyone else,” she explained. Anna’s resilience and commitment to proving naysayers wrong resonate throughout her work, as she hopes to redefine preconceived notions one video at a time.
Through her journey, Anna has not only embraced her identity but has also paid it forward by mentoring younger individuals with similar challenges through various organisations. Her efforts continue to illuminate the reality that disabilities do not define a person’s capabilities, but rather shape their unique experiences and paths in life.
