Lasker recounted the moment to CBS News Chicago, indicating that he was initially filming the damage when he heard a woman crying out for assistance.

Upon approaching the distressed woman, Lasker learned that her husband was stuck underneath the door of their destroyed home. Video footage taken by Lasker shows the trapped man expressing concern that he may have sustained a broken leg. In a remarkable display of quick thinking and bravery, Lasker tried to lift the door off the injured man while also ensuring that the woman held the camera to capture the moment.

Just moments later, two police officers arrived on the scene and assisted in the rescue. Lasker later described the harrowing experience as “very crazy stuff,” acknowledging that it was a unique and traumatic situation that he had not faced before in his career as a storm chaser. Reflecting on the incident, Lasker shared with FOX 32 Chicago how this was an entirely new experience for him. “To actually be a part of a dramatic, traumatic situation… this was a new one for me,” he expressed. He continued, stating that he usually anticipates merely observing the tornadoes, which often dissipate over open fields without causing harm to residents.

Despite the catastrophic events, Streator’s Mayor Tara Bedei reported no fatalities in the town, which has a population of around 12,000. However, the storm resulted in extensive property damage that left numerous families struggling to cope with the aftermath. Lasker suggested that although the man he helped seemed to have suffered serious injuries, he was hopeful for a good recovery.
