Laura Rush’s life took a dramatic turn when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 36. The diagnosis not only brought physical challenges but also a profound sense of loss regarding her identity as she faced the devastating effects of hair loss from chemotherapy. In her journey back to self-acceptance, Rush discovered the transformative power of specialist hair extensions, which helped her feel like herself again.

Rush received her diagnosis in December 2024, and since then, she has undergone extensive treatment, including chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy. Although she is now in remission and expresses immense gratitude for her health, the experience took a toll on her confidence and sense of femininity. “I literally lost my identity overnight,” she shared in an interview with the BBC. The loss of her hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes left her feeling disconnected from her previous self.
Initially, Rush explored various ways to cope with the changes to her appearance. She experimented with wigs and turbans but found herself feeling like a “shell” of her former self. Despite her efforts, nothing seemed to help restore her sense of self-worth and femininity in the way she had hoped.
Everything changed for Rush when she came across a social media post by a woman with alopecia who praised a specialist hair treatment. Inspired by the woman’s journey, Rush began to wonder if there might be similar options available for her fragile post-treatment hair. Intrigued, she reached out to Taylor Keig, a hair extension specialist who was dedicated to creating extensions tailored for those with delicate hair types.
Hearing Rush’s story, Keig felt compelled to assist. “When she told me a bit of what she’d gone through, I thought, ‘I’ve got to do something,'” Keig recalled. Recognising the significance of hair in a woman’s identity, she felt passionate about helping Rush regain her confidence.
On the day of her appointment, Rush arrived nervous and self-conscious, donning a beanie to cover her thinning hair. However, following her session with Keig, she emerged with a full head of hair, feeling an overwhelming sense of relief and joy. “It genuinely has brought me some happiness,” she remarked. The transformation allowed her to reclaim her identity, and she felt that the spark she believed had been taken from her was finally restored.
Rush is now eager to share her story in the hope of encouraging other women to reclaim their identities through similar treatments, while also stressing the importance of breast cancer awareness. Her own journey began when she accidentally discovered a lump during one of her showers, which turned out to be cancerous. “One thing I do want people to do is to please check,” she urged, emphasising the life-saving potential of regular self-examinations.
Through her advocacy, Rush aims to help others who may feel lost after experiencing similar challenges. She highlights that hair loss does not define one’s worth and encourages women to seek out options that might help them feel whole again. The experience of breast cancer has not only changed her perspective on life but has also motivated her to act as a beacon of hope for those facing similar struggles.
Laura Rush’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. As she navigates her new normal, she continues to inspire others to seek the help they need to reclaim their confidence and empower them to take control of their health. With her advocacy for breast cancer awareness, she aims to ensure that others are proactive about their health, potentially saving lives in the process.
By sharing her experience, Rush hopes to create a supportive community for those dealing with the effects of cancer, reminding them that they are not alone and that it is possible to rediscover joy—even after the most challenging of times.
