**Audubon Zoo Aids Rare Louisiana Pine Snakes in Conservation Efforts**

In a significant step towards revitalising an endangered species, Audubon Zoo in New Orleans has successfully released a group of Louisiana pine snakes into the Kisatchie National Forest. On June 3, 2023, a total of 14 non-venomous snakes, hatched at the zoo, were set free as part of the Louisiana Pine Snake Recovery Program, a dedicated initiative aimed at increasing the dwindling wild population of this rare reptile.


The Louisiana pine snake, classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, has seen a drastic decline due to habitat destruction. Once prevalent in Louisiana’s longleaf pine forests, their numbers plummeted by the 1930s. The concerted efforts of conservationists and zoos began in the 1980s with a captive breeding programme designed to bolster their numbers, paving the way for the recent release.
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Kisatchie National Forest was identified as an ideal release site due to its remoteness from roads and its rich soil conditions. Additionally, it is home to the pocket gophers, which are a primary food source for the Louisiana pine snake. Mallory McKinney, senior herpetology keeper at Audubon Zoo, emphasised the importance of this ecosystem, stating, “Louisiana pine snakes are essential for maintaining the balance within longleaf pine habitats.”
The non-venomous Louisiana pine snakes are known for their impressive size, reaching lengths of up to 56 inches. They sport distinctive black, brown, and russet scales adorned with dark blotches. Adapted to life underground, these snakes spend a considerable amount of time in the burrow systems of pocket gophers, utilising their pointed snouts to assist in burrowing.
Each of the snakes released from Audubon Zoo has been implanted with a microchip, enabling biologists to track their movements and monitor their health in the wild. The zoo reported that this technology is crucial for future conservation efforts as it allows for ongoing contact with the snakes post-release, providing invaluable data.
Prior to their release, the snakes underwent health evaluations that included weighing, measuring, and photographing each individual for identification purposes. The zoo’s herpetology department currently maintains a breeding colony of 21 adult Louisiana pine snakes, which produce offspring annually. Hatchlings are kept in captivity for nearly a year to ensure they grow robust enough to fend off natural predators when reintroduced to their natural habitat.
Since the start of these captive breeding initiatives, over 600 Louisiana pine snakes have been released back into the wild. In 2025 alone, 120 snakes were set free, demonstrating the effective collaboration between conservation partners. Dr. Steven Whitfield, the Audubon Nature Institute’s director of terrestrial and wetlands conservation, highlighted the importance of partnership in this success. “The collaboration is key to the success of this project,” he remarked.
Audubon Zoo’s dedication to wildlife preservation is sustained through donations, membership fees, and ticket sales. Dr. Whitfield noted, “Every time a guest buys a ticket to enjoy a day at the Zoo, they are helping this and other endangered species survive.” This approach ensures ongoing support for vital initiatives aimed at ecological restoration.
As conservation efforts continue, the release of Louisiana pine snakes into Kisatchie National Forest is a promising development for the species’ survival. Audubon Zoo’s role exemplifies the collective responsibility required for preserving our planet’s biodiversity, reinforcing the critical dialogue surrounding endangered species management in the United States.
