Vance Boelter Pleads Guilty in Murder of Minn. Rep. Melissa Hortman and Her Husband Mark

Vance Boelter, a 58-year-old man, has entered a guilty plea in relation to the high-profile murders of Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman and her spouse, Mark. This tragic incident unfolded in June 2025. As part of a plea agreement, Boelter will avoid the death penalty and instead face two consecutive life sentences in prison, along with an additional 40 years, as confirmed by recent reports.

Boelter appeared in a U.S. district court in Minneapolis on 11 June, where he acknowledged his involvement in the heinous crimes. He admitted to two counts of murder, as well as charges including the shooting of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, and an attempted shooting of their daughter, Hope. Additional charges included stalking both Hoffman and Hortman, along with a firearms offence.

The courtroom was filled with emotional tension as the Hoffmans were present during the proceedings, alongside the couple’s children, Sophie and Colin Hortman. The plea deal, allowing Boelter to evade a death sentence, has drawn significant media attention. His plea agreement not only spares him from capital punishment but also guarantees a lengthy prison sentence that reflects the gravity of his actions.

Details surrounding the tragic events have come to light through court documents and witness testimony. It was revealed that on the early morning of 14 June 2025, Boelter arrived at Senator Hoffman’s residence in Champlin, Minnesota, in a vehicle disguised as a police car. Wearing a fake police uniform and a realistic silicone mask, he misled the Hoffmans by claiming to be law enforcement as he approached their home.

Realising the deception, the Hoffmans attempted to close their door, but Boelter fired multiple shots at them. He appeared to be on a mission, armed with a list of Democratic officials’ names and addresses from across Minnesota. In a chilling pursuit, he attempted to approach the homes of two other officials before finally arriving at the Hortmans’ residence in Brooklyn Park, where he entered and unleashed multiple rounds of gunfire.

As law enforcement officers were already responding to reports of the initial shooting, they arrived at the Hortman home to find Boelter standing at the front door. He opened fire on the responding officers before managing to enter the house, ultimately killing both Melissa and Mark Hortman. Tragically, their family dog, a golden retriever named Gilbert, was also shot and subsequently had to be euthanised due to severe injuries sustained during the attack.

Following the murders, Boelter fled the scene and evaded capture for two days, during which a vast manhunt was launched to locate him. He was eventually apprehended near his home in Green Isle, Minnesota.

In the aftermath of this traumatic incident, the Hoffmans have initiated a civil lawsuit against Boelter, seeking justice for the significant physical and emotional toll the events have taken on their lives. John Hoffman has alleged in his complaint that he suffers from lasting damage to his left arm and hand, as well as to his digestive and urinary systems. His wife, Yvette, has also disclosed ongoing physical weaknesses that hinder her ability to return to work.
