A tragic case has emerged from Indianapolis, where a pregnant mother, Makala Pendley, has been found deceased in Mexico, four months after she and her seven children were reported missing. Pendley’s body was discovered on a dirt road in the municipality of Zinacantán, located in the state of Chiapas, on June 8. Earlier reports from Mexican authorities reveal that she appeared to have suffered a traumatic brain injury consistent with blunt-force trauma.

Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca, the prosecutor for the Chiapas state, provided updates regarding the investigation, confirming that Pendley’s remains were likely abandoned between eight and twelve hours before they were located. The circumstances surrounding her death have raised alarming questions, and local law enforcement has taken significant steps in the investigation.

Authorities have detained Pendley’s partner, who is referred to only as Joseph “N,” identifying him as the primary suspect in the case. The investigation continues as local law enforcement works to gather evidence to understand the circumstances that led to the tragic outcome.
Pendley’s seven children have since been located and are reportedly safe, now in protective custody. Their identities are not being disclosed. According to Llaven Abarca, the children have been placed under the care of Mexican authorities while arrangements are made with the United States Embassy for their repatriation to the United States. The children are expected to return to Indianapolis along with their mother’s remains.
Family members have expressed deep sorrow over Pendley’s death. Her sister, Maurica Lambert, described Pendley as a devoted mother who was at least six months pregnant at the time of her disappearance. “She was a good mum,” Lambert remarked, emphasising Pendley’s dedication to her children. “As mums, we have our bad days, but she always put her kids first.”
In February, Pendley and her children were reported missing by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD). Investigators began to piece together the timeline of events, highlighting the urgency of the situation as concerns for their safety grew.
A cousin of Pendley, Jami Dowdy, shared fond memories of her and expressed the family’s overwhelming grief. “Her laughter, everything about Makala, she was just… whenever you saw her, her eyes lit up,” Dowdy recalled. The family is now focused on ensuring that the children are returned to a safe environment with their relatives who are eager to support them during this difficult time.
Pendley’s case has drawn attention not only for the tragedy itself but also for the ongoing efforts of local and international authorities to reunite the family. As the investigation progresses, the family hopes to bring Pendley’s children back to Indianapolis, where they can begin to heal from the painful loss of their mother.
The IMPD and the office of Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca have been approached for further comments, but officials have not yet provided additional information. The family and the wider community remain in mourning as they navigate the aftermath of this heartbreaking situation.
