Wyatt Russell, the son of famed actress Goldie Hawn, is set to take the stage alongside a star-studded cast in Steven Spielberg’s latest film, “Disclosure Day.” This collaboration marks a significant moment, as it comes over five decades since Hawn starred in Spielberg’s early work, “The Sugarland Express,” released in 1974.

At 39, Russell is receiving accolades for his role in the upcoming science fiction thriller. In an interview with PEOPLE, he shared insights about his experience working with the legendary director, who is now 79 years old. Russell appeared alongside Spielberg and his fellow cast members, including Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, and Colin Firth, at the film’s New York City premiere on June 8, 2026.

Reflecting on his mother’s history with Spielberg, Russell expressed his family’s excitement regarding the connection. “I think she was thrilled that I was going to be working with Steven, and that was intriguing for her, to see her son in such a collaboration,” he stated. However, Russell admitted he hesitated to share the news with his family initially, mentioning that he was anxious about his role in the film until it was officially released.
In “The Sugarland Express,” Hawn portrayed a woman determined to break her husband (played by William Atherton) out of prison to reunite with their son before he enters the foster care system. This film was instrumental in catapulting Spielberg into the spotlight, as it was his last project before the massive success of “Jaws” in 1975. Russell expressed his appreciation for this familial history, saying, “It is wonderful to reflect on ‘Sugarland Express’ and realise that I now have the opportunity to work with Spielberg.”
In “Disclosure Day,” O’Connor takes on the role of Daniel, who seeks to unveil information about the existence of non-human intelligence on Earth. Blunt plays Margaret, a meteorologist inadvertently dragged into a conspiracy surrounding extraterrestrial life, while Russell plays her boyfriend, who becomes entangled in the plot following some unusual events during a news broadcast.
Russell praised his co-star Emily Blunt, highlighting her talent both as an actress and as a person. “Working with Emily was incredible. Not only is she exceptionally talented and versatile, but she is also a truly great individual, which made the collaborative process much more enjoyable,” he noted. Russell emphasised the importance of being a good listener on set, particularly as much of his performance relies on his interactions with her character.
In a light-hearted moment during the interview, Russell was asked what movie he would show to aliens if they arrived on Earth. Without skipping a beat, he replied with Spielberg’s renowned “Schindler’s List,” stating, “I’ve always believed in showcasing our worst side. If aliens are trying to understand humanity, they should see this film as it reflects the darker aspects of our nature.”
“Disclosure Day,” which is scheduled for release on June 12, 2026, is already generating buzz, given the heavyweights involved in the project. With its mix of science fiction and dramatic storytelling, anticipation for the film continues to build as audiences eagerly await its premiere.
As Russell embarks on this creative journey with Spielberg, he has undoubtedly forged a special connection to his family’s cinematic legacy, reminding viewers of the significant contributions his mother made to the film industry during its nascent stages.
