The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office provided an update on the incident on June 5, indicating that, although the extensive search for Coughran has concluded, the investigation into his disappearance remains active and ongoing. A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office assured the public that they are committed to locating Coughran and will conduct further search operations as new leads arise.

Gregory Almos, a deputy with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that while there are no active search teams in place at this moment, they have employed aerial support in the form of helicopters to aid in their efforts. Almos also noted that there are plans to deploy additional ground crews in the near future to continue the search.
“It’s not called off,” Almos emphasised when speaking to local media, stating that the search season is far from over. However, he expressed concern for Coughran’s wellbeing, suggesting that it is increasingly likely the hiker did not survive. “If we were out looking for a person that was able to attract attention, then we would have found him,” he said, indicating the likelihood of a tragic outcome.
According to reports, Coughran was last recorded making contact at around 4 p.m. on May 25, as he made his way from Fallen Leaf Lake towards the Desolation Wilderness. Authorities pinpointed his last known location as being near Angora Peak earlier that morning. Conditions on the day of Coughran’s last known sighting were described as clear and mild, but the weather subsequently deteriorated, becoming cold and windy.
Descriptions of Coughran indicate that he stands at 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing approximately 150 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. Authorities believe he may have been wearing khaki shorts when he went missing, although specific details about his attire are not confirmed.
The search for Coughran has mobilised a substantial response, including 192 personnel and numerous volunteers, reflecting the seriousness of concerns for the missing hiker’s welfare. The area in question, Desolation Wilderness, spans over 63,960 acres and consists of subalpine and alpine forest, as well as glacially-formed valleys and lakes.
The rugged landscape has posed challenges for search and rescue teams, making the operation more complex. Despite the exhaustive efforts made thus far, the determination of Coughran’s fate remains uncertain, and authorities are urging the public to come forward with any potential information that could assist in the investigation.
As the search transitions from an active hunt to an ongoing investigation, Coughran’s friends and family continue to hold out hope for positive news, amidst the difficult circumstances. The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office has promised to keep the community updated on any developments regarding Jason Coughran’s case.
Local citizens and fellow hikers have also expressed their sympathies and concerns, showcasing the close-knit community and the camaraderie found within the outdoor enthusiast circles. Many have shared their thoughts and prayers for Coughran’s safe return, holding onto hope in what has been a deeply tragic and concerning situation.
The investigation into Coughran’s disappearance serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the inherent risks associated with outdoor activities. As the days progress, the search will continue in the hearts and minds of those who knew him, and those who take to the trails in his memory.
