In a poignant journey of self-discovery, 24-year-old Alexia Alvarado is learning to embrace her unique beauty after being diagnosed with vitiligo, a skin condition that leaves patches of skin devoid of colour. The diagnosis unveiled underlying issues related to stress and childhood trauma, prompting her to rethink her mental and emotional well-being.
Alvarado first noticed a change that would lead her to her dermatologist when she spotted some of her lower eyelashes turning white. This surprising alteration came to her attention as she meticulously applied lash extensions. While initially dismissing the change as a peculiar quirk, her curiosity eventually led her to seek a medical opinion.

The revelation hit during a tumultuous period in her life, filled with significant changes. Alvarado was grappling with the complexities of a new job, the emotional aftermath of a breakup, and the challenge of relocating away from her childhood home. In an exclusive interview, she recounted the moment her dermatologist delivered the diagnosis: “In that moment, I felt as if my life had fallen apart,” she shared.
Vitiligo, affecting approximately 1% of the global population according to the Cleveland Clinic, is a condition that results in the loss of pigmentation in the skin and hair. For Alvarado, the implications of her diagnosis went beyond just a change in appearance as it forced her to confront stressors that had taken a toll on her health over many years.

“I began to reflect on my life and how stress had taken over,” Alvarado recounted. The doctor’s assertion that her condition was stress-related opened her eyes to patterns of behaviour and unresolved emotional trauma from her childhood, which continued to impact her well-being into adulthood.
The vitiligo would manifest predominantly on the right side of her face and in her hair, complemented by the effects of alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder that leads to patchy hair loss. Together, the two conditions created a stark reminder of the stress she had been experiencing.
Reflecting on her past, Alvarado noted that her childhood traumas shaped her experiences as a teenager, while challenging relationships in her early adulthood left her in a perpetual state of anxiety. “I don’t believe I noticed any signs of my body trying to warn me,” she explained, indicating that the pressures and worries she faced only exacerbated her health issues.
The diagnosis brought a collection of insecurities to the forefront. Alvarado, who identified as shy, feared that the visible transformation of her appearance would hinder her ability to feel comfortable in her own skin. “I thought, ‘Who’s going to like someone with patches of white hair and a big white blob on their face?’” she recalled, echoing the sentiments shared by many navigating similar changes in their appearance.
Despite these concerns, Alvarado found unwavering support from her friends, family, and partner. Their reassurance during this challenging time was pivotal in helping her realise that her condition did not define her identity, even though it altered her appearance. “They treated me the same as before, and that helped immensely,” she said.
The experience has shifted Alvarado’s perspective, prompting her to focus more on self-care and the importance of managing stress effectively. Embracing her individuality, she encourages others facing similar challenges to cherish their unique qualities. “As hard as it is to say because everyone is different, I would tell someone like me to embrace what you’re given. We’re all beautiful in our own ways,” she affirmed.
Through her journey, Alexia Alvarado shines a light on the profound interplay between physical health, emotional resilience, and self-acceptance. Her story serves as a reminder that while challenges may arise, the response to such changes can cultivate personal growth and a deeper understanding of oneself.
