A young shift manager at a McDonald’s in Northern California remains in critical condition after a shocking incident where hot cooking oil was allegedly thrown at him by a fellow employee. The victim, 20-year-old Jacob Smith, has sustained severe second-degree burns covering large portions of his face, neck, right arm, and back, necessitating his ongoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The incident reportedly took place on Saturday, June 6, while Jacob was preparing to conclude his shift at the fast-food restaurant. According to his mother, Amber Smith, Jacob was in the office readying the day’s financial tally when he was caught off guard and assaulted. She recounted, “He saw out of the corner of his eye something coming at him, and before he knew it, hot oil was being thrown on him.”

Immediately subsequent to the attack, emergency personnel arrived on the scene, with Yuba City Police Lt. Michael Bullard confirming that Jacob was alert and able to communicate, despite the severe burns visible on his body. “He was up walking around and able to respond to questions,” Bullard reported. However, the pain from his injuries was reportedly so intense that he required specialised medication only available within the ICU.
The alleged perpetrator, identified as 23-year-old Jalani Bluett, fled the scene but was apprehended later that night by the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office. Before his arrest, the sheriff’s office had issued a public appeal for information regarding Bluett’s whereabouts, expressing concerns for his well-being due to pre-existing vulnerabilities.
During his arraignment, Bluett was charged with multiple serious offences, including assault with a deadly weapon and mayhem, further compounded by the substantial bodily injuries inflicted on Jacob. Following the court hearing, he was remanded in custody without bail, as the judge deemed him a high-risk individual.
Amber Smith, distressed by the attack on her son, voiced her strong desire for justice. “I want him to serve the time he needs to for what he’s done to my son. I don’t wish ill upon him; I simply want him to understand the enormity of his actions and the pain he has caused,” she said, illuminating the anguish her family is currently experiencing.
As Jacob continues to fight for recovery, his family has set up a GoFundMe page to assist with the mounting medical expenses. Amber disclosed that Jacob is expected to undergo skin graft surgery to address the deep burns, emphasising the long and painful road ahead for his recovery.
In a message conveyed through the crowdfunding platform, Jacob expressed gratitude amidst his suffering. He stated, “As much as I want to be angry, or want to hate people, it’s just so hard to feel that way when I have so many people showing their love for me.” His resilience shines through as he remains focused on healing following this traumatic ordeal.
Reflecting on his support network, Jacob added, “Thank you to my family for being so incredibly supportive and loving, and lifting me up in my time of need. Thank you to my friends who have shown so much care and taken time out of their own schedules to check on me every day.” This mindset underscores a spirit of gratitude despite the extreme difficulty of his situation.
While McDonald’s corporate representatives have yet to provide a statement regarding the incident, the devastating attack has prompted discussions on workplace safety and the mental well-being of staff within the fast-food industry. As the investigation unfolds, many are rallying around Jacob, hoping for a swift return to health and justice for the grievous harm he has suffered.
