A new live-action adaptation of the classic ‘Masters of the Universe’ franchise is set to hit cinemas, reviving the iconic tale that first captured the hearts of audiences in the 1980s. Originally launched as a toy line by Mattel in 1982, the franchise has since expanded into films, video games, and beloved animated series, including the original ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’ which aired from 1983 to 1985.

The forthcoming film, due for release in 2026, will specifically centre on the character He-Man, portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine. Set on the fantastical planet of Eternia, Galitzine’s character, Adam Glenn, embarks on a journey to save his homeland from the malevolent forces led by Skeletor, played by Jared Leto. Director Travis Knight has hinted that She-Ra, a character closely linked to the ‘Masters of the Universe’ lore, may also have a role in subsequent sequels, should the film prove successful.

Galitzine has expressed his determination to embody the role of He-Man, an exiled alien who learns of his destiny as the universe’s greatest hero. He revealed the intense physical training he endured for the part, stating, “It took a really, really long time. It’s really not for the faint of heart.” He-Man’s character has always been central to the franchise, and Galitzine’s portrayal aims to recapture that essence.

Camila Mendes joins Galitzine in the film as Teela, He-Man’s stalwart ally. Mendes, known for her role as Veronica Lodge in the series ‘Riverdale’, remarked on the bond she developed with Galitzine during their extensive training together, emphasising the importance of their on-screen chemistry. Her character is one of the few from Adam’s past that he encounters as he navigates his new reality.
The film adds notable star power with Idris Elba portraying Man-at-Arms, Teela’s adoptive father. Elba expressed his enthusiasm for the project, recalling the original series as a significant part of his childhood. He described his role as crucial to the narrative, as Man-at-Arms is a key figure in the resistance against Skeletor.
In a villainous turn, Jared Leto steps into the shoes of Skeletor, the principal antagonist known for his ruthless reign over Eternia. Knight described Leto as having a deep connection to the character, which helps in bringing a vibrant and compelling performance to the role. Leto’s experience in playing villains, such as the Joker in ‘Suicide Squad’, adds depth to his interpretation of Skeletor, a character the director describes as the “embodiment of toxic masculinity.”
Alison Brie also joins the cast, embodying Evil-Lyn, Skeletor’s cunning accomplice. Renowned for her comedic roles, Brie explained how she infused a sense of humour into her portrayal, knee-deep in the classic femme fatale archetype. This fresh take aims to broaden the character’s appeal and complexity beyond the original animated series.
In a significant shift, Kristen Wiig lends her voice to Roboto, a character historically depicted by male actors in the original cartoons. Her performance denotes a progressive step for the franchise and aims to bring a new dimension to the character, which heeds the modern calls for diversity and reinterpretation in long-standing myths.
Other notable cast members include James Purefoy as King Randor, He-Man’s father, and Charlotte Riley portraying Queen Marlena. The film seeks to weave a contemporary narrative that remains true to the legacy of the original series while allowing the characters to evolve on screen.
As excitement builds ahead of the film’s release, fans of the franchise can expect a blend of nostalgia and fresh perspectives, as the story of Eternia and its formidable heroes and villains is brought back to life for a new generation. With the potential for further instalments, the ‘Masters of the Universe’ promises to offer both thrilling adventures and a rich tapestry of character relationships that resonate with audiences both old and new.
