A 20-year-old Auburn University student named James “Weston” Higginbotham has been missing since May 29 following a family trip to Japan. The family had travelled to the country to celebrate the graduation of his younger brother, an occasion that has now become overshadowed by concern for Weston’s well-being.

According to reports from his mother, Nancy Higginbotham, the family had been together since May 25. During their stay, tensions reportedly arose, leading Weston to seek a little space from his family. “He just needed time by himself, just like we all did,” Nancy explained, emphasising the commonness of family disagreements and the need for personal time.

On the evening of his disappearance, Weston was last seen at the Kyoto train station, where he arrived at approximately 8:15 p.m. local time. At around the same time, he was confirmed to have gotten off the train at Yamashina station. Disturbingly, just minutes later at 8:29 p.m., his phone lost service, which has complicated efforts to locate him. Nancy shared that the family’s attempts to track Weston via the Life360 app were cut short due to the sudden loss of network, and their messages to him went unanswered.

In the days following his disappearance, Nancy and her husband, Keith Higginbotham, have been tirelessly involved in the search for their son. Unfortunately, their efforts have faced significant challenges, notably a typhoon that has swept through the area, making conditions for search teams treacherous. Despite these difficulties, local authorities have mobilised a substantial search effort. As of June 3, at least 50 police officers, alongside K9 units and helicopters, have been dispatched to comb through the terrain around Yamashina, where Weston was last known to be.
Despite these extensive search efforts, Nancy reported that they had yet to find any trace of Weston. An emotional strain weighs heavily on the family, who have noted that it is unusual for Weston to be uncontactable in such a manner. “We stay very well connected,” Keith remarked, underscoring their close-knit familial dynamics and the shock at Weston’s sudden absence.
Physically, Weston was last seen wearing a distinctive white T-shirt emblazoned with the phrase “save the bees,” alongside lavender corduroy trousers, silver hoop earrings, and worn-out Adidas trainers. Recognising her son’s possible emotional state, Nancy suggested on social media that Weston may be experiencing distress. However, she also acknowledged that it is not uncommon for young adults to seek solitude during difficult moments.
In a statement to the media, Nancy expressed her resolve. “He can survive, and we are going to find him,” she said, radiating both concern and hope. As the days progress without any sign of Weston, the community and beyond remains affected by the uncertainty surrounding his disappearance, with many holding out hope for his safe return.
The family awaits any news as they navigate this trying situation, leaning on shared memories and the hope that they will soon be reunited with their son. As the search continues, they encourage anyone with information that may assist in locating Weston to come forward. The heartbreaking situation highlights not only the fears of a family in distress but also the larger risks that can come with international travel.
