A 40-year-old man from Montana is currently unaccounted for following a tragic accident that occurred on Sunday, May 31, in Idaho. The incident involved a pickup truck that plunged into the North Fork of the Payette River after colliding with another vehicle on State Highway 55.

Authorities have reported that the accident took place just before 3 p.m. local time, when a green Dodge Ram, heading south, crossed into the oncoming lane and struck another vehicle close to milepost 93.5. The force of this collision propelled the truck into the river, leading to urgent concern for its occupants.

According to eyewitness accounts, at least one person exited the pickup truck just before it was swept away by the swift river current. However, it remains uncertain whether this missing individual was the same man who has now been reported missing. Additional witness statements suggest there may have been other people aboard the truck at the time of the crash.
The second vehicle involved in the accident was occupied by three adults, all of whom sustained minor injuries. They received treatment at the scene and were subsequently released. Meanwhile, the search for the missing man, who has been identified as residing in Billings, Montana, has commenced along the river corridor.
Officials noted that the conditions of the Payette River posed a significant challenge for rescuers. This stretch of water is notorious for its strong currents, particularly during this time of year when snowmelt contributes to high water levels and rapid flows. The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management has indicated that in an average year, vast volumes of water are funneled down from the mountains primarily between April and August, making the river particularly perilous for anyone caught in its grasp.
In light of these dangerous conditions, first responders were unable to reach the submerged truck immediately. It wasn’t until around 11:30 a.m. the following day, June 1, that law enforcement closed off the section of highway near the crash site to facilitate the extraction of the vehicle after water levels had sufficiently receded.
During the recovery effort, rescue workers, including Pamela Solon from Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue, highlighted the additional risks posed by the water’s velocity. “With the force of the water, we must heighten our safety measures and remain vigilant,” Solon remarked while present at the scene.
Following the retrieval of the pickup truck, rescuers found no one inside. Authorities have notified the missing man’s family about the ongoing situation, though they have not yet confirmed the number of occupants at the time of the incident. “We are still in the process of identifying any occupants and determining exactly who was in the vehicle,” stated Sergeant Dave Avery of the Idaho State Police.
The investigation into this tragic accident is still underway, and the police have not released any further details regarding the circumstances of the collision. Efforts to ascertain additional information about the occupants and the events leading up to the crash are ongoing, though authorities have not yet responded to requests for further comment about the investigation.
As the search continues for the missing Montana man, the community eagerly awaits updates on what has proven to be a disturbing and troubling incident.
