Wang, believed to be a passenger on a cruise ship, was last seen at around 10 a.m. on May 27 while pursuing the Mount Liamuiga trail alone, without the accompaniment of a guide. According to a statement from the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF), he managed to call emergency services at approximately 2 p.m. that day to report that he was lost. Unfortunately, after that communication, authorities lost contact with him.

Following the distress call, a joint search and rescue team sprang into action, commencing operations on the same day and continuing their efforts into the evening. The official search resumed early on May 28, with teams meticulously combing the mountainside, reaching up to the crater of the stratovolcano.

As the search progressed, the RSCNPF issued an appeal for additional help from the community, encouraging experienced hikers, trail users, and other physically capable individuals to assist in the search efforts. Volunteers quickly stepped forward, joining forces with various entities, including the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, the Fire and Rescue Services, the Police Training School, and the Red Cross, among others.
The hiking path on Mount Liamuiga is known for its challenging terrain, reportedly encompassing steep rock scrambles and slippery sections. Given these daunting features, the RSCNPF had previously advised hikers to undertake excursions with registered guides, inform someone of their hiking plans, and ensure their mobile phones were fully charged before setting off.
After several days of relentless searching, Wang Zyuan’s body was discovered by one of the rescue teams on June 1. Investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding his death are currently underway, as authorities aim to piece together the events leading up to this tragic incident.
In response to the loss, the RSCNPF expressed deep gratitude towards all those who contributed their time and effort in the search operation. The community’s support highlighted the spirit of collaboration often seen during emergencies in the region.
The police force also extended condolences to Wang’s family and friends and urged the public to avoid speculation about the incident, encouraging reliance on official updates for accurate information as the case continues to unfold.
Safety is an ongoing concern for those exploring natural landscapes such as Mount Liamuiga. Those planning to hike the area are reminded of the importance of proper planning and preparation, especially in locations known for their potential hazards. As this unfortunate outcome is a poignant reminder, all who venture into such environments should take heed of advice to significantly reduce risks.
Further information regarding the investigation and its findings is awaited, while authorities continue to focus on ensuring the safety of future hikers in the region.
