Last month, skeletal remains were found in a cow pasture in Lakeview, Florida, sparking an investigation that has now revealed the bones are believed to belong to a 70-year-old woman. The discovery was made on May 28 by a group of children who were playing near a wooded area close to Fish Hatchery Road and Morgan Combee Road.

During a press briefing held on May 29, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd recounted how the initial discovery unfolded. The children, initially dismissed by their parents, were persistent and eventually convinced a mother to accompany them to the location. “Quite frankly, the kids had to be very persuasive and not give up,” Judd stated, according to the local ABC affiliate, WWSB. Upon arrival, the concerned parent confirmed their claims by making the grim discovery herself.

When the remains were first uncovered, they included a skull, a lower mandible, and several vertebrae. Law enforcement initiated an investigation but earlier assessments mistakenly suggested that the remains might have belonged to a man aged between 35 and 40. However, upon further examination, officials clarified that the evidence pointed towards the bones being those of an elderly female.
In a subsequent press conference, Sheriff Judd provided additional details, confirming the discovery of more skeletal remains located to the north of the initial find, behind the deceased woman’s home. Neighbours described the woman as a “recluse,” suggesting she had limited interactions with the community.
Judd highlighted that the last confirmed contact with the woman occurred on April 1 during a wellness check, at which time she was deemed to be alive and well. “She was also healthy enough to chew out the neighbours and told them to mind their own business,” he quipped, referencing her independent nature. This information adds a layer of complexity to the case, suggesting that she had been living relatively undisturbed until her passing.
At this stage of the investigation, the cause of death remains undetermined. However, Sheriff Judd has expressed that foul play is not suspected in this tragic incident. “At this point in time, it appears that she was deceased just outside of her backdoor,” he explained, indicating that the remains may have been scattered by local wildlife following her death.
As of June 1, authorities reported that there were no new updates available regarding the case or the identity of the deceased. The investigation continues to seek clarity surrounding her death and any potential health issues that may have contributed to it.
The discovery of the skeletal remains has both shocked and saddened the local community, raised concerns about individuals living in isolation, and prompted discussions regarding wellness checks for vulnerable residents. As more information becomes available, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to uncovering the truth behind this tragic circumstance.
Further updates will be provided to the public as details unfold, while community members reflect on the life of a woman who, despite her reclusive nature, has captured the attention and concern of those in her neighbourhood.
