In a recent report by Eating Well, Portland, Maine, has been recognised as the most walkable city in the United States, bringing attention to its unique charm and pedestrian-friendly environment. The 2026 Best Wellness Towns report awarded Portland a perfect Walk Score of 100, emphasising its suitability for those who enjoy exploring a city on foot.

The coastal city, home to approximately 70,000 residents, is celebrated for its dense centre, which features stunning Victorian architecture and picturesque cobblestone streets. One of the standout features of Portland is its 5-mile coastal trail, which links East End Beach to Bug Light Park in South Portland. This scenic pathway provides walkers with uninterrupted views of Portland Harbour and Casco Bay, highlighting the region’s natural beauty. Visitors can easily spend hours wandering along this route, discovering local gems and soaking up the salty air.

Portland’s impressive score of 100 stands in stark contrast to the average score of 72 among the cities considered.
