The body of Derek Samuel, a 20-year-old from the Atlanta area who had been missing for nearly a month, has been discovered in a wooded area behind an apartment complex. His family confirmed the tragic news on May 31, following an extensive search operation that included volunteers and K-9 teams.

Samuel was last seen on April 29 when surveillance cameras captured him leaving a Target store at Camp Creek Marketplace in East Point, Georgia. According to reports, he had been dropped off at the store by friends who later reported him missing after they lost contact with him. The footage showed Samuel walking calmly toward Commerce Drive, but, shortly thereafter, he vanished without a trace.

The search for Samuel quickly intensified, leading to multiple operations coordinated by local authorities and Georgia Emergency Search & Rescue. Investigators initially located his cellphone in a wooded area near the shopping centre, spurring further inquiries into his whereabouts. However, despite tireless efforts, it would take weeks for search teams to locate Samuel.

On the day his body was found, members of the Georgia Emergency Search & Rescue team arrived at the location early in the morning. A spokesperson for the organisation stated that they spent time praying with Samuel’s family before ultimately discovering his remains in the woods later that afternoon in an area that had not been previously searched.
While Samuel’s family expressed heartfelt gratitude towards those who supported their search efforts, they also conveyed their deep sorrow at the outcome. In a statement, they shared, “Although this is not the outcome we all prayed for, unfortunately, it has now become our reality.” They asked for privacy during this challenging time and acknowledged the emotional toll that the loss has taken on their lives.
Authorities have indicated that the remains discovered have yet to be positively identified, and an official investigation into the circumstances surrounding Samuel’s death is ongoing. Police in East Point took to social media to provide updates, advising that they remain focused on conducting a thorough inquiry to piece together the events leading to his disappearance.
Prior to finding his body, police executed searches based on tips received from the public that directed investigators to various locations, including Aqua Waters Quarry near Lithonia, about 30 miles from the Target store. Unfortunately, these attempts did not yield results until the discovery late in May.
Family members described Derek Samuel as a cheerful and outgoing young man with aspirations of launching his own clothing line. His absence had left a considerable void in their lives, and they are now faced with the painful process of mourning.
The local community has rallied around Samuel’s family, offering condolences and support to help them through this harrowing time. The loss has resonated broadly, prompting discussions about issues related to safety and missing persons, as many reflect on the importance of community vigilance.
As investigations continue, more information is hoped to come to light, aiding the family and authorities in understanding the circumstances surrounding Samuel’s death. For now, his family mourns a promising young life cut short, while the community remembers him fondly and stands in solidarity during this period of grief.
