On the evening of May 20, Langan was driving home from work along Jackie Robinson Parkway when he noticed Pinto, the principal of P.S. 81, stuck inside her car as it began to submerge. Recalling the harrowing weather conditions, Langan described the torrential rain that had transformed the area into a chaotic scene. “It was a crazy night,” he remarked, emphasising how unprecedented the downpour felt. As he navigated the flooded road, he saw multiple vehicles overwhelmed by rising waters, with some occupants forced to escape onto the roofs of their cars.

Understanding the urgency of the situation, Langan immediately decided to assist. Pinto’s vehicle was almost entirely submerged, with water levels encroaching upon her head. “I knew I had to do something,” Langan said. With no time to waste, he approached her car and focused on the sunroof, where Pinto was trying desperately to breathe. “I was trying to keep my head as close to the sunroof as possible because the water had come up that far,” she recalled.
Using a Yeti cup provided by Pinto, Langan began to smash the glass of the sunroof. “I just started wailing away with the Yeti cup,” Langan recounted, describing the urgent desperation of the moment. His efforts paid off as he created enough of an opening to pull Pinto to safety. Their relief in the face of such adversity made for a dramatic rescue.
The following Friday, the two met once more, emotions running high as they reflected on the incident. Pinto expressed her gratitude, describing Langan as “an angel.” She praised his selflessness, noting that he could have easily bypassed the rescue to return home to his family rather than risking his safety for someone he did not know. “Travis never thought of himself,” she stated.
Their meeting was attended by New York City officials, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore, who both honoured Langan’s courageous actions. Mamdani highlighted the rapid rise of the water in Pinto’s vehicle, mentioning how close she was to danger by the time Langan arrived. “Very quickly, it began to fill her car. Carmen was running out of room to breathe,” he noted.
In his praise, Mamdani remarked on the dedication of firefighters, emphasising that their commitment to serving the city extends beyond their scheduled shifts. “He didn’t hesitate,” the mayor said, acknowledging Langan’s instinctive reaction to danger. “Travis was off duty, but I know that I am here at a headquarters of so many New Yorkers… whose commitment to this city is not measured by hours in a day.”
Bonsignore also took a moment to commend Langan, remarking on the dedication of firefighters who act selflessly, regardless of whether they are in uniform. She expressed pride in Langan’s actions, stating that it reflects the spirit and soul of those serving the New York Fire Department.
In her own reflection, Pinto summed up the event with heartfelt words, articulating a sense of pride in the community she serves. “We have real superheroes,” she said, humorously exalting Langan alongside fictional character Spider-Man, who famously hails from Queens. “Thank you, Travis, for saving my life,” she finished, encapsulating the gratitude felt by many for heroes like Langan whose actions truly exemplify bravery and selflessness.
As the city celebrates this act of heroism, Langan is also preparing for a significant personal milestone, with his wife expecting their third child soon. This blend of professional courage and personal commitment paints a poignant picture of a dedicated firefighter who embodies the spirit of New York City.
Travis Langan’s swift response not only saved a life but has also reminded the community of the unsung heroes among them who often go above and beyond in times of crisis.
