Roger Wilson, a long-time resident of Texas, is now embarking on a journey to rebuild his life following the destruction of his home of three decades due to a catastrophic wildfire. The Hungate fire in Randall County, which ravaged over 34,000 acres, resulted in the tragic loss of much more than just property for Wilson; his cherished pets were also victims of the inferno.

Reflecting on his early years at the property, Wilson recalled how few neighbours he had when he first moved there. “There was nobody else, so you might almost say I was a homesteader to a certain degree,” he shared with local news outlets KFDA and WLBT. However, the raging fire left him with little more than memories of the past, nearly engulfing everything he held dear.
In the wake of the disaster, Wilson’s heartache deepened with the loss of two dogs and four cats. Fortunately, one of his cats was discovered alive under a freight container, prompting a visit to the veterinary clinic to ensure its well-being. Lavern, his dog, also emerged from the ordeal unscathed.
Without home insurance to cushion the blow, Wilson is now contemplating his next steps in a challenging situation. “I’m fixing to move out into a freight container that is still available. But I will live here on the property. It’ll be a little rough, but it’s okay,” he stated, showcasing his resilience in adversity. His plans involve setting up a temporary living arrangement while he plots a path forward.
In addition to his own losses, Wilson is the legal guardian of an elderly woman named Donna Thoroughman, whose circumstances further highlight his compassionate character. Having taken Donna in after she was evicted from her previous home, Wilson remains dedicated to re-establishing a sense of stability for both himself and his charge. “She has nobody except for me. So I’m her legal guardian,” he explained, underscoring his commitment to providing care for Donna amidst his personal challenges.
The tragic loss of his second wife, Mardee, in a car crash just months prior to the fire has profoundly shaped Wilson’s perspective. He described the recent calamity as merely a “flea bite” in comparison to the emotional toll of previous experiences. “I lost my wife back in December. An accident just about five, six miles from here. So to me, I’ve already been through the worst. So this, to me, is just a flea bite,” he recounted. This ability to remain grateful and humble is a testament to his strength of character.
In a demonstration of community spirit, Wilson’s son, Ross, alongside his wife, Jules, has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to aid in his father’s recovery. In their appeal, they welcome any form of assistance—be it financial contributions or encouraging messages. “He is asking for anything that might help—whether it’s helping hands, funds, or kind words. Every bit of support will make a difference as Roger works to rebuild his life and continue caring for Donna,” Ross stated, conveying the urgent need for assistance.
The response from the community has been heartening. Wilson expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support he has received from neighbours and local residents. “I’m so grateful for the Texas Panhandle because I’ve been to a lot of different places. The Texas Panhandle and its people are pretty much awesome anywhere in the world,” he shared, emphasising the warmth and camaraderie found in his surroundings.
As Wilson begins this challenging process of rebuilding, he exemplifies resilience, community reliance, and the spirit of compassion. His story serves as both a reminder and an inspiration for all, showcasing the strength that individuals can muster even in the face of overwhelming adversity.
