In a dramatic rescue operation, one of the five villagers trapped in a flooded cave in Laos has been successfully extricated. This rescue, which occurred on 29 May 2026, comes more than a week after the group found themselves stranded in the cave due to severe weather conditions and subsequent landslides.

The individual rescued, identified as Muen, was seen emerging from the cave and was visibly disoriented but relieved. Footage circulating on social media captured the moment when Muen was assisted by first responders as he made his way to safety. After his rescue, he received a thorough medical evaluation to assess his condition.

Muen’s father expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the rescue teams, acknowledging their dedication and tireless efforts in bringing his son back safely. “Thank you so much to the rescue team. I want to express my deepest gratitude,” he stated. His appreciation extended to all the volunteers involved in the operation, underscoring the collective effort that had taken place over the past week.
Despite this significant breakthrough, concerns remain as the fate of the other four trapped villagers is still uncertain. According to Kengkad Bongkawong from the Metta Tham Kalasin Rescue team, additional rescue operations have been temporarily halted until the following day, allowing teams to regroup and plan for the next steps.
The situation is further complicated by reports of two additional villagers remaining unaccounted for. Efforts are ongoing to locate and assist these individuals. The rescue teams continue to remain hopeful and committed to finding all those missing, despite the arduous conditions they face.
The seven villagers had ventured into the cave situated in the central Laotian province of Xaisomboun on 20 May, with the intention of searching for gold. Unfortunately, the entrance was soon blocked off by a landslide caused by the heavy rains that have been affecting the region.
Bounkham Luanglath of the local rescue volunteers confirmed that five of the villagers were eventually discovered safe on 27 May as rescue operations intensified. Following their rescue, those who were trapped were provided immediate care, including hydration, soft food, and foil blankets to keep them warm and comfortable.
“I’m still shaking. Our team made it happen,” Luanglath shared via a message, highlighting the emotional toll and sense of urgency felt by the rescue teams throughout the operation.
As the situation continues to unfold, authorities are keenly focused on ensuring the safety of all involved, with rescue operations aiming to resume as soon as conditions permit. The community remains hopeful for the safe return of the remaining villagers, as families and loved ones await news. Rescues in such challenging environments serve as a reminder of the risks inherent in pursuing even the most explosive hopes, such as the search for precious metals.
