In an exciting development for fans of classic television, Netflix has revealed the premiere date for its highly anticipated sequel series to *A Different World*. The show, which is a continuation of the beloved original, is set to debut on September 24, 2026—exactly 39 years after the initial launch of the original series.

This announcement was made during the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) on May 29, and Netflix has emphasised that this date serves as a tribute to the legacy of the original series while also aiming to engage a new generation with the stories from Hillman College. According to Netflix, the sequel is not just a revival but an opportunity to honour the cultural significance that *A Different World* brought to audiences during its original run from 1987 to 1993.
The original sitcom, a notable spin-off of *The Cosby Show*, followed the lives of Denise Huxtable, portrayed by Lisa Bonet, alongside her fellow students at the fictional HBCU (Historically Black College and University) in Virginia, Hillman College. The series, in its first season, introduced viewers to a range of characters who navigated the challenges and experiences of college life, but it was during its subsequent seasons that the show underwent significant changes.
After the initial season, several key cast members, including Bonet, Marisa Tomei, and Loretta Devine, departed the show. Under the direction of Debbie Allen, the series was restructured to focus on the characters of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, played by Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison, respectively. This retooling embraced and showcased Black culture and youth, providing a platform for relatable storytelling during a pivotal time in US history.
The upcoming sequel will centre on Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Dwayne and Whitley, as she navigates her own journey through Hillman College. This fresh narrative aims to explore contemporary themes while paying homage to the original material that resonated with viewers nearly four decades ago.
The new series will also introduce a diverse group of characters. Among the new cast members are Alijah Kai, who plays Rashida; Chibuikem Uche as Kojo; Cornell Young IV as Shaquille; Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir; and Kennedi Reece as Hazel. Their characters will bring new perspectives and experiences to the Hillman campus, enriching the storytelling landscape of the series.
Furthermore, several original cast members are set to return for the sequel. Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer, and Darryl M. Bell are all confirmed to reprise their roles, ensuring that the show retains a connection to the beloved characters that fans grew up with. Their participation reflects the continuity of the Hillman legacy and is expected to draw a nostalgic audience back to the series.
The sequel is being developed as a single-camera comedy and will consist of ten half-hour episodes. Showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride is at the helm of this project, promising a modern take on the classic series. Notably, Debbie Allen will also return as an executive producer and director for several episodes, including the highly anticipated premiere.
In a recent post on social media, Netflix shared behind-the-scenes images from the set of the upcoming series, generating buzz and excitement among fans. The caption read, “Freshman class loading!!! Production is officially underway on the A Different World sequel series!” This enthusiastic announcement suggests that the team is committed to delivering a show that not only respects its predecessor but also captivates a new audience.
As the premiere date approaches, the anticipation for Netflix’s sequel to *A Different World* continues to build. With a balance of new stories and familiar faces, there is much to look forward to for both longtime fans of the original series and those who will discover Hillman College for the first time.
