Samuel Adams, the renowned beer company, has recently unveiled an exciting new range of craft beers in honour of America’s 250th anniversary. The Brewer Patriot Collection features four distinctive brews, each inspired by some of the nation’s founding fathers as well as traditional Colonial brewing techniques and recipes.
Crafted with the expertise of Master Cicerone Shelley Smith, this inventive collection is rooted in history. Smith elaborated that many of the recipes have been adapted from historical texts, some of which can even be found in the New York Public Library. “A lot of these particular recipes for the Brewer Patriot Collection are actually historical recipes,” she explained. As one of only 29 individuals worldwide to hold the prestigious title of Master Cicerone, Smith has a deep understanding of beer production and flavour profiles.

Each beer in the collection possesses a unique character shaped by its special ingredients. For instance, the George Washington Porter incorporates unusual components such as molasses and licorice, alongside classic notes of toffee, cocoa, and dates. “These are certainly not the kinds of ingredients you’d typically find in modern beers,” Smith noted, suggesting that the porter pairs excellently with a steak au poivre, reflecting the culinary traditions of the Colonial era.
Another addition to the Brewer Patriot Collection is the James Madison Dark Wheat Ale, which is characterised by its rich cocoa and toffee flavour enhanced by smoked malted barley. Interestingly, the ale is named after James Madison, the fourth President of the United States and a passionate home brewer who advocated for the creation of a national brewery. “One of the most unique things about this ale is its yeast,” Smith pointed out. “We use hefeweizen yeast, which imparts lovely banana and clove notes without any actual fruit or spices added.” Ideal for a summer barbecue, this beer complements grilled chicken superbly.

The collection also includes a modern twist on a historic favourite with the 1790 Hard Root Beer. This particular brew is deemed “spicy and herbal” and is said to be reminiscent of the root beer that was popular in Colonial taverns. Flavoured with sassafras, wintergreen, and licorice—and further sweetened by honey and vanilla—the 1790 Hard Root Beer is a nostalgic nod to the past. Smith recommends serving it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an inventive take on the classic root beer float.
Inspired by Thomas Jefferson, the No. 3 Ginger Honey Ale features a delightful mix of flavours, including floral notes from ginger and honey, alongside zesty lemon peel. This invigorating ale would pair beautifully with a lemon meringue pie, as Smith explains: “The lemon provides a perfect bridge between the citrus notes in the beer and those in the pie.” This thoughtful pairing allows the sweetness of the honey to harmonise with the dessert, showcasing beer’s versatility beyond traditional wine pairings.
The Brewer Patriot Collection celebrates American brewing heritage while offering modern consumers a chance to explore rich historical flavours. Each bottle is infused with a story, and through these beers, drinkers can connect with the roots of American craft brewing that evolved from experimentation and local ingredients.
Currently, the collection is available for purchase at GiveThemBeer.com, priced at a thematic $17.76. The launch of this collection invites both beer enthusiasts and history buffs alike to raise a glass in celebration of the past and the remarkable evolution of brewing in America. Samuel Adams not only honours its historical influences but also enriches the experience of enjoying craft beer.
As the nation prepares for its year-long quarter-millennial celebrations, the Brewer Patriot Collection serves as a fitting tribute—a fusion of history, innovation, and flavour that is sure to resonate with beer lovers and culinary adventurers as they explore the dynamic world of craft beer.
