A former payroll manager is facing serious allegations of embezzlement, accused of stealing over £1.5 million from a Miami-based orthopedic clinic over the course of two years. Rachel Lynne Poor, 40, from Coral Springs, Florida, was arrested on 21 May and charged with first-degree grand theft, running an organised scheme to defraud, and credit card fraud.

According to a report by the Miami Police Department, Poor had been employed at Miami Back & Neck Specialists, a medical facility situated on Biscayne Boulevard in the city’s Bay Point area. The investigation into her activities began after a newly appointed payroll manager detected irregularities in the clinic’s payroll records, prompting the clinic’s owner to file a police report in June 2024.

The authorities allege that Poor manipulated payroll data to her advantage, reportedly increasing her own salary and awarding herself bonuses without any authorisation from the clinic’s owner. The arrest report detailed that Poor had taken on a role akin to that of an owner when establishing the clinic’s account with the payroll processor ADP. This position allegedly granted her comprehensive administrative powers, allowing her control over payroll functions such as employee salaries, bonus arrangements, payment approvals, and account-related permissions.
Investigators have indicated that between September 2021 and January 2024, Poor is said to have inflated her biweekly salary by approximately £1,720, and awarded herself bonuses as large as £25,000 on several occasions. The total amount believed to have been misappropriated through these salary alterations and bonus arrangements stands at £1,092,692.
In addition to payroll fraud, Poor is alleged to have made unauthorised personal purchases amounting to £411,737 using a company credit card. These expenditures raised significant red flags, contributing to the suspicions surrounding her financial activities within the clinic.
Court documents reveal that Poor has formally entered a plea of not guilty to the charges against her and has requested a jury trial. Her attorney, Jean Richardson, is listed as her legal counsel, and an arraignment hearing had been scheduled for 20 July in Miami-Dade County court. She faces a combined bail amount of £35,000 across the three felony charges.
In response to the allegations, Poor has maintained her innocence, sparking interest in how the legal proceedings will unfold. The case has garnered media attention not only for the substantial amount of money involved but also due to the potential implications for the integrity of financial management in healthcare settings.
As this story develops, it highlights the ongoing issues of fraud and financial mismanagement within industry sectors that require rigorous oversight and accountability. The Miami Back & Neck Specialists clinic’s experience serves as a reminder of the necessity for robust internal controls and vigilance against potential fraud.
Authorities in Florida remain focused on this case, seeking to ensure justice is served and to reinforce the importance of ethical practices within the healthcare profession. The outcome of Poor’s trial could have implications for similar cases and underscore the need for continuous scrutiny of financial transactions in medical establishments.
