In a world where unique names are becoming increasingly popular, one couple has taken this trend to heart, opting for extraordinary nature-inspired names for their daughters. Kendra and Bill Fogarty, who live and travel in an RV, have recently shared the captivating story behind the names of their two daughters, Acadia and Willamette, which reflect their family’s passion for adventure and the great outdoors.

The Fogartys have embraced a nomadic lifestyle that allows them to explore some of the United States’ most stunning national parks and historical landmarks. As they navigate their unconventional life of remote work and homeschooling their children, Kendra expressed their commitment to experiencing the wonders of nature. “We are intentional about planning visits to see as many national parks, monuments, and historical sites as possible,” she explained during a recent interview.

Their eldest daughter, nine-year-old Acadia, has a name inspired by the famous Acadia National Park in Maine. The thoughtful choice encapsulates the family’s love for the rugged beauty associated with the park, and Kendra noted how they value the heartfelt connection her name provides, particularly in their frequent travels.
When the Fogartys discovered they were expecting another daughter, the couple set their sights on a name that would similarly reflect their affinity for nature. After deliberation and consideration of various landmarks, they settled on Willamette, after Willamette National Forest in Oregon. This choice bore additional personal meaning, as Bill’s legal name is William, making the connection even more special.
During a recent trip to Oregon, the family celebrated Willamette’s sixth birthday by visiting her namesake. Kendra recalled a memorable moment from their visit when they captured a photograph of young Willamette standing proudly in front of the forest’s official sign, excited to commemorate the occasion. Kendra remarked, “I think technically the locals pronounce it Will-AAAH-mette, but we went with our own pronunciation, Will-uh-METTE, for these purposes.”
As is often the case with unique names, the parents have also adapted Willamette’s name for everyday use, referring to their daughter simply as Willa. Kendra humourously mentioned that the six-year-old typically only hears her full name when being admonished, although Kendra and Bill are seeking to break that association.
In addition to the distinctive first names, the Fogartys have opted for classic middle names for both daughters. This decision was guided by the possibility that their children may not always identify with their more unusual first names. Willamette’s middle name, Evelyn, carries sentimental significance within the Fogarty family, adding another layer of personal history to her identity.
The narrative of the Fogarty family is both inspiring and heartwarming, encapsulating a commitment to adventure while cherishing the importance of name and identity. Through their choices, Kendra and Bill foster a love for nature and exploration in their daughters, creating memories that will last a lifetime. As they continue their journeys across the country, the stories behind Acadia and Willamette will serve as a beautiful reminder of their family’s rich experiences and shared love for the outdoors.
