An Iowa woman has been sentenced to a decade in prison following her shocking attempts to induce a miscarriage through a drug-laced lasagna. Amber Snow, a 36-year-old resident of Decorah, was found guilty of multiple charges stemming from a December 2025 incident that involved the distribution of food laced with oxycodone to a pregnant relative.

On May 26, Snow received her ten-year sentence after pleading guilty to four counts, which included conspiracy to commit a non-forcible felony, attempted non-consensual termination of pregnancy, child endangerment, and a controlled substance violation. The case has drawn considerable attention due to its disturbing nature, as well as the severe implications for both the targeted individual and her unborn child.

The situation came to light on March 10 when law enforcement was alerted about the lasagna, which was suspected to contain a harmful substance. Following an investigation, authorities determined that Snow and her alleged accomplice, Matthew Uthoff, had intentionally tainted the dish intended for a pregnant family member. The food was later confirmed to contain oxycodone, leading to both individuals’ arrests.
Snow was taken into custody early in March, while Uthoff was arrested shortly thereafter on March 26. According to a release from the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO), electronic communications between the two individuals indicated their intent to cause a miscarriage. However, the exact motivation behind their actions remains unclear.
The WCSO confirmed that the pregnant woman and her baby, who were the targets of this illicit act, are safe. Despite inquiries, the sheriff’s office has not disclosed whether the woman actually consumed the lasagna or whether her child has since been born.
In the wake of the arrests, both Snow and Uthoff were held on cash bonds of $100,000. While Snow has since been sentenced, Uthoff’s future in court remains uncertain; he has pleaded not guilty to a series of serious charges. These charges include not only delivering a controlled substance and child endangerment, but also intentionally attempting to terminate a human pregnancy without the victim’s knowledge or consent.
It remains unclear when Uthoff will next appear in court, and details regarding his legal representation have not been publicly disclosed. The case highlights significant legal and moral questions regarding bodily autonomy and the lengths to which individuals may go to exert control over others.
Residents in the community are grappling with the shocking revelations in this case, illustrating the profound impact such incidents can have on families and neighbourhoods alike. As the legal proceedings continue, the focus now shifts to Uthoff and the potential consequences he may face for his alleged involvement.
As this case unfolds, it serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of illicit drug use and the serious legal repercussions that can arise from such reckless actions. The broader implications of this incident will likely resonate in discussions surrounding drug regulations and family safety in the coming months.
