A tragic incident occurred on the Manitou Incline in Colorado on May 23, when a 48-year-old man, Nick Jogolev, died while hiking with his son. The El Paso County Coroner confirmed Nick’s identity a few days later, prompting an outpouring of grief from his family and community. His widow, Coral Jogolev, shared her sorrow with local media, describing her husband as a dedicated father who lived for his seven children. “His kids were his world,” Coral said in an interview with NBC affiliate KUSA. She fondly remembered him as someone who always had “the biggest smile” on his face, adding that he was a source of happiness for their family.

On the day of the incident, Nick was hiking the incline with their nine-year-old son, Sasha, as part of a Cub Scout outing. The Manitou Incline, known for its steep 2,768 steps and challenging elevation gain of 2,000 feet within a mile, is regarded as one of Colorado’s most iconic trails. According to the City of Colorado Springs, the incline offers a strenuous workout along with breathtaking views, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Coral told KUSA that Nick had prepared for the hike, mentioning that their Cub Scout pack had trained for the ascent in previous years using other inclines for practice. As they progressed along the trail, a fellow hiker noticed Nick sitting with Sasha around the 900th step and remarked on his pale appearance. After drinking some Gatorade, Nick continued his journey, unaware that he would soon succumb to an undisclosed health issue.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences on their social media platform, stating that good Samaritans were present and did their utmost to assist Nick until emergency services arrived. Despite their efforts, Coral commented, “If anybody would have been able to save him, they were there. And there was just nothing anybody could do,” suggesting the sudden nature of the tragedy.
In response to the crisis, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to support Coral and her children during this challenging time. The campaign highlights that Nick was the family’s sole provider, managing the complicated needs that come with a blended family, some of whom require special care. The fundraiser’s organiser noted, “Coral and Nick worked together as a team to ensure all their kids’ needs and appointments were met.”
Coral now faces significant financial challenges in the wake of her husband’s passing. The fundraiser seeks to provide assistance with ongoing bills, day-to-day necessities, and the practical support required to care for her children, especially as they navigate through this emotional upheaval.
As the family awaits the results of the autopsy to better understand the circumstances surrounding Nick’s death, Coral has reflected on the long road ahead for her and the children. “It’s really difficult,” she said, indicating the profound loss and adjustment that her family must now endure without their beloved husband and father.
This heartbreaking event serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of community support in times of need. The Jogolev family is now relying on the kindness of family, friends, and the wider community as they continue their journey in the wake of an unimaginable loss.
