Dan Greaney, a veteran writer and producer for the acclaimed animated series The Simpsons, has officially launched his campaign for the 2028 presidential election. He made the announcement on 26 May, presenting himself as a “progressive Republican” drawing inspiration from historical figures Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt.

Greaney is perhaps best known for the 2000 episode “Bart to the Future,” in which he controversially featured a fictional scenario of Lisa Simpson becoming the first female president of the United States, grappling with the legacy of “President Trump.” This episode has led many fans to believe it foreshadowed Donald Trump’s eventual rise to political prominence.
In his campaign reveal, Greaney’s announcement video played on his newfound notoriety within the Simpsons fandom, showcasing his prior work as a seemingly prophetic writer. He acknowledged the political malaise that has taken hold of the Republican Party, stating, “Trump, Vance, the billionaires, careerists, and cowards in both parties have turned their backs on [the United States]. It’s money, power, and security for them, but not for you.”

The 61-year-old writer further elaborated on his vision for America, insisting that the government should serve everyone. “In America, the government is supposed to work for everyone. Democracy for all, accountability for all, prosperity for all. We must restore this,” he emphasised. With a cheeky nod to his ambitious ambitions, Greaney quipped, “I’d love to help, but I’m not a lawyer. I’m just a self-proclaimed prophet… who went to law school, graduated, passed the bar… Wait! I am a lawyer!”
As the campaign proceeds, Greaney presents himself in a polished manner akin to a typical politician. His platform is characterised by a commitment to restoring democratic principles, as well as advocating for progressive policies such as universal healthcare and a Green New Deal. His central message revolves around creating an America that functions for all its citizens.
Interestingly, Greaney’s decision to run as a Republican may surprise some. Though he has historically voted across party lines, he believes his candidacy aims to engage a wide range of Americans, including those within the Republican base. He hopes to bridge existing divides and foster a collective sense of national unity.
Greaney concluded his announcement in a light-hearted manner, referencing his pivotal role in predicting Trump’s presidency: “As to what happens next… we’ll just have to wait and see. You will, at least. I actually do know how it turns out.” This remark encapsulates his unique position at the intersection of political commentary and satirical media.
In previous interviews, Greaney expressed his views on the implications of creating a Trump-inspired narrative within the series. Rather than predicting the future, he described “Bart to the Future” as a cautionary tale about the turbulent political climate in America at the time. “The important thing is that Lisa comes into the presidency when America is on the ropes,” he remarked, highlighting the episode’s depiction of a nation facing numerous issues. “That just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom.”
In the wake of Trump’s election in 2016, Greaney reflected on his earlier work with a mix of bemusement and concern, acknowledging the series’ long-standing tradition of satirising American culture. His observations have led him to ponder the possibility that the show’s counter-cultural ethos may have inadvertently contributed to the rise of anti-establishment sentiments in the political sphere.
As a candidate for the 2028 election, Greaney stands among the early declarations within the Republican Party. Current frontrunners for the nomination include Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who finished third in the 2016 primaries that Trump ultimately won.
Greaney’s run may mark a notable shift in the political narrative, drawing on his unique background in comedy and storytelling to offer new perspectives on pressing issues in America. His commitment to restoring equity and democratic norms may resonate with voters who yearn for a return to values that prioritise the common good. As the campaign unfolds, it will be intriguing to witness how a writer from a renowned animated series seeks to navigate the complex landscape of contemporary American politics.
