In a poignant demonstration of love and resilience, Courtney Coccaro recently took the extraordinary step of relocating her wedding to the rooftop of the Cleveland Clinic. This heartfelt decision was made to ensure her father, John Coccaro, who is battling advanced cancer, could be present for her special day.

The 30-year-old bride from Stow, Ohio, expressed that having her father walk her down the aisle was “the most important thing in [her] life.” John, 55, has been a significant influence in Courtney’s upbringing, serving as her soccer coach and teaching her essential skills such as hunting and fishing. These moments forged a deep bond between father and daughter, making her wedding day an occasion they both cherished.
Originally set to take place on June 30, the couple’s wedding plans took an unexpected turn when a doctor informed the family that John’s health was deteriorating, posing a risk that he might not survive until the scheduled date. Faced with this heartbreaking revelation, Courtney and her fiancé, Michael, made the decision to postpone their wedding to ensure John could attend. They rescheduled the ceremony for May 10 in their hometown of Pennsylvania, hoping that time would allow John to recover.
Unfortunately, John’s health took another negative turn, resulting in another hospitalisation at Cleveland Clinic. With the wedding date fast approaching and John still unable to leave the hospital, Courtney and Michael came up with a new plan: to hold the ceremony on the rooftop of the facility where John was receiving treatment.
Courtney remarked, “I wanted to make sure he was able to have the chance to be there.” The couple’s decision was met with overwhelming support from the Cleveland Clinic staff, who promptly stepped in to assist with the arrangements. Members of the Intensive Care team and other departments rallied together on short notice to create a beautiful ceremony.
The staff helped clean the rooftop space, set up chairs, and even decorated the area to reflect the couple’s vision for their wedding day. Additional support included directing guests and finding a private area for Courtney to change into her wedding gown. A wheelchair was secured to transport John to the rooftop, with medical staff on hand to ensure he was comfortable during the ceremony.
Reflecting on the unique circumstances of her wedding day, Courtney said, “It was so special and so sweet, and we really appreciate everyone’s help. I wouldn’t change it for the world.” The event highlighted not only the love between a father and daughter but also the compassionate care provided by the hospital staff, who went above and beyond to support a family’s cherished moment.
Despite the ongoing challenges posed by John’s health condition, the family remains hopeful. Courtney conveyed that her father continues to fight every day, and the family is committed to maintaining a positive mindset through these trying times. “We are all keeping a positive mindset and staying strong as a family,” she said.
As John continues his treatment at the Cleveland Clinic, the wedding on the hospital rooftop stands as a testament to the enduring bonds of family and the lengths to which one will go to ensure that loved ones are included in life’s most significant milestones.
