In a remarkable journey of personal transformation, 20-year-old Nirvaan Nagaldinne has gone from feeling out of shape to becoming an Ironman finisher in less than a year. This inspiring progression not only added a new chapter to his life but also motivated his mother, Priya Vadasseri, to embark on her own fitness journey at the age of 50.

At the beginning of 2025, Nagaldinne faced a turning point in his physical well-being. Describing himself as being in the “worst shape” of his life, he resolved to run a half marathon. The completion of that race, however, ignited a passion for further athletic challenges. Following the half marathon, he set his sights on an Ironman 70.3, a race that involves swimming, cycling, and running. Despite a setback due to a diagnosis of plantar fasciitis just weeks before his next race, which left him on crutches, he persevered. Remarkably, Nagaldinne managed to cross the finish line of the Ironman Florida in 10 hours and 15 minutes.

As his fitness journey progressed, Priya, witnessing her son’s determination and resilience during his training, felt inspired to take on a challenge of her own. Although she had minimally engaged in running previously, Priya decided to prepare for her first half marathon. The duo eventually registered for the Great Wall of China Half Marathon—a dramatic course featuring over 5,000 steps and stunning scenery.
The timing for their adventure unfolded nearly perfectly, as Nagaldinne was studying abroad in Japan during the first half of 2026, providing a convenient opportunity to travel to China. After months of overcoming injuries, he was ready to run again, while Priya dedicated herself to rigorous training. “She got the bug,” he noted, reflecting on the motivation she drew from his efforts. Their experience of completing the race together at a UNESCO World Heritage site is a memory they cherish.
Preparation for the half marathon proved to be an additional challenge for Nagaldinne, who was also gearing up for another Ironman event. His training routine involved swimming, cycling, running, and strength training for up to 20 hours a week. The demands of his schedule were further complicated by academic commitments and travel across Asia. “A lot of my sightseeing happened during training runs,” he remarked.
While he was navigating this busy schedule, Nagaldinne faced the dual challenge of transitioning between different forms of exercise, particularly after recovering from his injury. To mitigate the risk of re-injury, he included specific tendon-focused exercises in his regimen while building his stair and running endurance. “The only way to get used to it is to do it over and over until your body stops complaining,” he explained.
On race day, the atmosphere was electric. Having completed a reconnaissance of the path the day before, both Nagaldinne and his mother were still taken aback by the harsh reality of the course’s steep and uneven terrain. “You’re scrambling up on all fours at certain points,” he recalled of the physical demands.
The breathtaking views throughout the race were a welcome distraction from the physical exertion. “With the wind in your hair and mountains rolling out forever, you almost forget you’re racing,” he reflected. Despite the splendour, competitors were challenged by narrow paths and slippery stones that required caution alongside speed.
Upon reaching the finish line, the moment was one of profound joy, especially for Priya as she completed her inaugural half marathon. The emotional weight of their accomplishment struck Nagaldinne deeply as he celebrated his mother’s achievement alongside her. “We crossed it together,” he said, highlighting the bond they shared during this experience.
Nagaldinne’s story did not go unnoticed, as he began sharing snippets of his race on TikTok, which quickly gained traction, garnering over 670,000 views. The parade of supportive comments pointed towards a collective admiration for the mother-son duo, which included touching messages from Priya herself. In her comment, she expressed her gratitude for the support she received, emphasising that it is “never too late” to take on new challenges.
Ultimately, Nagaldinne aims to inspire others through his mother’s journey, encouraging everyone to pursue their aspirations no matter their stage in life. “My mom is proof that you can pick up something brand new at 50 and absolutely crush it,” he asserted. Their story serves as a powerful reminder of resilience and the strength found in starting anew, making it clear that age should never hold one back from embracing opportunities for growth and achievement.
