The incident occurred on 10 May, when Kira suffered a serious brain injury that led to her being airlifted to Milpark Hospital for urgent medical attention. Her mother, Angelique Meyer, chronicled the heartbreaking developments on social media, appealing for prayers and expressing hope for her daughter’s recovery. “She suffered a brain injury and was taken to Milpark Hospital by helicopter,” Angelique stated. “The brain scan did not bring good news, but we know God is in control. Please pray with us, the next 48 hours are very important for recovery and that the swelling will go down.”

Tragically, just six days later, Angelique revealed that Kira had been declared brain dead. In a devastating update, she shared her anguish in a heartfelt post, saying, “Kira was declared brain dead by three doctors yesterday. Her lungs also gave in. Although she is still connected to machines, she is already safe at Jesus’ feet.”

Angelique highlighted the difficult situation they were facing as Kira was experiencing what doctors termed an “unnatural death,” indicating that medical procedures needed to be followed before a formal declaration of death could be made. “We are not yet ready for the post with ‘rest in peace’ or ‘angel wings’,” she reflected, expressing the family’s struggle to come to terms with their loss.
On 19 May, the family confirmed Kira’s passing. In their announcement, Angelique described Kira as “loved by all,” emphasising the young skater’s vibrant spirit and enthusiasm for involving others in her life, especially during her sporting events. Alongside the announcement, an invitation was posted for a memorial service to honour Kira’s life. The invitation paid tribute to her character, stating, “A beautiful soul, forever loved and deeply missed beyond words,” and invited family and friends to join in a celebration of her life.
The news of Kira’s untimely death has sent shockwaves throughout the skating community in South Africa. The South African Figure Skating Association expressed their deep sorrow in an official Instagram post, stating, “It is with profound sadness that the South African Figure Skating Association (SAFSA) marks the passing of Kira Meyer. Kira was a cherished member of our skating community, and her presence, both on and off the ice, will be deeply missed.”
Their heartfelt message extended condolences to Kira’s family, friends, coaches, and fellow skaters during this challenging time, noting that their thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this loss.
