In a recent interview, J’an opened up about her experiences, challenges, and the creative process that has shaped her music.

Born Maya Brown in Pasadena, California, J’an’s journey through the music industry began at the tender age of 18 when she secured a record deal with Capitol Records. At the time, the excitement of being associated with a label known for artists like Daft Punk and Massive Attack felt monumental. However, once the environment shifted following leadership changes, J’an found herself grappling with external pressures regarding her identity as an artist.

Reflecting on her experiences, she commented, “There were a lot of projections as to who I should be as an artist onto me.” This sentiment resonated particularly due to her experiences as a Black woman in music. Struggling against the expectations set by industry executives who questioned the ‘urban’ appeal of her work led to a troubling period characterised by anxiety and self-doubt. Despite initial success, including tours and contributing to the Oscar-winning film ‘Promising Young Woman,’ J’an felt increasingly disconnected from her artistry.

The turning point for J’an occurred in 2020, as she grappled with panic attacks and sought therapy to understand her feelings of inadequacy. “I realised I was making my life’s work, and I wasn’t proud of it,” she shared. This epiphany compelled her to hit the reset button on her career. Shortly thereafter, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic led to the end of her relationship with Capitol Records. It was a difficult time, prompting feelings of failure and apprehension about her future in music.

However, this period of uncertainty opened new avenues for creativity. After stepping away from the spotlight, J’an shifted her focus to songwriting for other artists, collaborating with notable names such as Pharrell Williams and Summer Walker. Co-writing the hit song “Bloom,” which won a 2025 JUNO Award, reinvigorated her sense of identity and clarity in her music.

J’an attributes her newfound confidence to her experiences outside the pressure of being the frontwoman. “It gave me so much clarity about who I am,” she recalled, explaining how she felt more authentic when she wasn’t trying to fit into specific boxes or be someone she wasn’t. She describes returning to her roots as a suburban girl, embracing her true self as she navigated the songwriting process.

Musically, J’an draws inspiration from her family background. Raised in a nurturing environment by a creatively inclined mother and a father who introduced her to diverse musical genres, she developed a passion for music from an early age. Her childhood experiences, including exploring her musical talents with her sisters in a band and later joining a choir, solidified her commitment to songwriting and performance.

The catalyst for her latest project emerged from witnessing the trauma of the 2025 wildfires in Los Angeles, particularly affecting her childhood neighbourhood of Altadena. “I feel like there are so many places in my childhood that are just portals for who I could become,” J’an expressed. This yearning for connection to her past resulted in the release of her single “Cul-de-Sac,” which resonated with listeners, amassing over 1.5 million streams on Spotify since its launch.

Now, with ‘Blindfaith County,’ J’an aims to inspire through her six-track EP, which amalgamates elements of folk, alt-pop, and R&B. The project reflects themes of resilience and hope, touching on personal experiences such as learning to navigate relationships and mental health. Each song, as J’an describes, embodies an optimistic outlook, rooted in the belief that brighter days lie ahead.

J’an’s artistry is gaining recognition, with support from peers like Tate McRae and Madison Beer. Even Billie Eilish acknowledged her talent, further validating J’an’s journey in the music scene.
