Mother, 25, and Father, 28, Face Homicide Charge After Newborn Baby Dies from ‘Multiple Traumatic Injuries’

A tragic incident involving the death of a newborn has led to serious legal consequences for the child’s parents in Pennsylvania. Kevin Canaan, aged 28, from Reading, and Yeniffer Tavarez-Cepeda, aged 25, of New York City, have been charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and endangering the welfare of a child following the demise of their infant son.

On May 2, 2023, authorities were alerted to potential child abuse at Tower Health Reading Hospital after the newborn was reported to be in medical distress. Officers from the West Reading Police arrived to find the baby, who had appeared healthy prior to this incident, requiring urgent medical assistance. The severity of his condition necessitated airlifting to Penn State Hershey Medical Center, where he tragically passed away the next day, on May 3.

An autopsy carried out by the Dauphin County Forensic Center later revealed that the cause of death was “multiple traumatic injuries.” Medical personnel indicated that the infant’s injuries were inconsistent with those typically resulting from childbirth, instead suggesting physical abuse as a likely cause. The investigation, revealed by the Berks County District Attorney’s Office, highlighted a stark failure on the part of the parents to take necessary action when their child displayed signs of distress.

Authorities state that during the period the infant sustained his injuries, he was under the sole care of Canaan and Tavarez-Cepeda in their hospital room. Investigators determined that the injuries occurred during a short, clearly defined timeframe, coinciding with wellness checks conducted by hospital staff. Their findings suggested that at least one of the parents recognised their child’s serious condition yet chose not to seek assistance from the medical professionals present.

In light of the evidence, Canaan and Tavarez-Cepeda were formally charged on May 19, 2023. Arrest warrants were subsequently issued for the couple, who were arrested and brought to the Berks County Sheriff’s Central Processing Center for booking procedures, including fingerprinting and arraignment.

The case has prompted community-wide outrage and sorrow, highlighting serious concerns regarding child safety and the responsibilities of parents. The District Attorney’s Office, as well as local authorities, have remained tight-lipped since the initial investigation began, leading some to call for greater transparency in cases of suspected child abuse.
