An Ohio father, Jeffrey Canzonetta, has been accused of assaulting his daughter during a domestic dispute that took place on Saturday, 9 May. The incident, which unfolded in Vienna Township, prompted a swift response from the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office, following a call regarding domestic violence at approximately 1:30 p.m.

At the heart of the altercation was a disagreement over the daughter’s untidy living conditions. Reports indicate that the 22-year-old daughter accused her 56-year-old father of becoming aggressive during a confrontation about her messy bedroom. According to the incident report, the daughter described her father as having been “acting crazy,” and she alleged that he had pushed both her and her mother in the hallway.

The situation escalated when Canzonetta allegedly insulted his daughter regarding the state of her room. Despite her repeated requests for him to leave her space, he reportedly continued to approach her. The culmination of tensions led to a violent episode, with the daughter stating that Canzonetta physically pushed her against a wall.
Eyewitness accounts from Canzonetta’s wife, Maria, who was awakened by commotion, revealed that she found the pair engaged in a heated exchange. The mother stated that she intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, only to be allegedly pushed to the ground by her husband during the melee.
Following the turmoil, the daughter dialled 999. It was at this point that Canzonetta allegedly strangled her, wrapping his hands around her neck and applying significant pressure, which left her struggling to breathe. The victim described the incident as a horrifying experience, asserting that her father’s grip rendered her unable to assert her voice in the confrontation.
After leaving the home to attend work, Canzonetta was apprehended at his place of employment later that same day. The arrest took place without further incident, and he was subsequently transported to the local county jail.
Records from Trumbull County detail the charges against Canzonetta, which include felony strangulation and two counts of domestic violence, classified as misdemeanours. Following his arraignment on Monday, 11 May, he was granted bail set at $7,500.
The case highlights concerning issues surrounding domestic violence, particularly within family dynamics. As reports often emphasise, such incidents reveal the potential for escalation in disputes to lead to alarming and violent behaviours, necessitating attention and intervention.
Local authorities continue to stress the importance of reporting domestic disturbances, as they can quickly turn perilous. In light of this incident, the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone experiencing similar situations to seek help immediately.
As the judicial process unfolds for Canzonetta, it remains to be seen how the courts will respond to these allegations. Community members and advocates for domestic violence awareness await the outcome with concern and the hope that justice will prevail, reflecting a commitment to protecting victims of such crimes.
