The latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda is proving to be more severe than previously anticipated, prompting urgent action from health officials. As of May 18, 2026, the outbreak has claimed more than 130 lives and resulted in at least 500 confirmed infections. The outbreak is linked to a rare strain known as the Bundibugyo virus, which has complicated efforts to identify cases swiftly.

The ongoing spread of Ebola raises serious public health concerns, particularly given the swift and often deadly nature of the disease. The virus, belonging to a group known as orthoebolaviruses, is known to transmit through contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals, whether living or deceased. It is important to note, however, that Ebola is not considered airborne or highly contagious; an individual must have direct contact with the virus to become infected.

Historically, outbreaks of Ebola have been linked to single zoonotic transmission events, as observed during the 2014 West Africa epidemic. That outbreak started with a two-year-old boy in Guinea coming into contact with an infected fruit bat. It then spiralled out of control, eventually resulting in over 17,000 cases and approximately 6,070 deaths across multiple countries.
A similar catastrophic spread is now a concern for health officials in the DRC and Uganda. Dr Anne Ancia, a representative for the WHO, indicated that investigations have confirmed cases have already spread to other regions, both within DRC and across borders. “The more we are investigating this outbreak, the more we realise that it has already disseminated at least a little bit across the border and also in other provinces,” she told the BBC.
Experts are appealing for heightened vigilance and preemptive measures to avoid a repeat of past crises. Engaging local communities in awareness efforts, combined with a robust health response, has been deemed crucial in controlling the outbreak. Medical teams continue to emphasise the need for extensive public health campaigns to inform communities about the means of transmission and the importance of seeking immediate medical attention for symptoms related to Ebola.
