In a recent press conference cited by Newsweek, Dr. Cook emphasised the dangers associated with measles parties, urging parents to prioritise the health and safety of their children. Dr. Matthew Harris, a paediatric emergency medicine physician and medical director for clinical preparedness at Northwell Health, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the severe risks involved in exposing children to the measles virus.

Measles, a highly contagious viral infection, can result in “devastating consequences” according to experts, far more serious than those posed by chicken pox. Dr. Harris recounted a harrowing experience from his medical training where an unvaccinated child suffered from subacute sclerosing encephalitis, a debilitating condition characterised by persistent brain inflammation, as a result of measles.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommends the MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, for all children. Vaccination is crucial in preventing the spread of measles and reducing the risk of severe complications associated with the infection. Studies have shown that fully vaccinated children rarely contract measles, and if they do, the illness tends to be mild and rarely requires hospitalisation.
