Colin Jost created quite a stir during the season 51 finale of Saturday Night Live on 16 May when he surprised audiences with a bald cap. The comedian, who co-hosts the show’s popular “Weekend Update” segment with Michael Che, had everyone buzzing with his unexpected transformation.

During an engaging sketch, Jost and Che participated in their customary biannual joke swap, wherein the duo read jokes penned by each other without prior knowledge of their content. This particular segment took a surprising turn when Che joked about Jost considering shaving his hair off. Earlier in the episode, Che couldn’t resist the opportunity for some light-hearted banter.
Jost then delivered a rather pointed joke regarding rapper Kanye West’s controversial comments about Adolf Hitler, saying, “Now that joke is offensive to everybody, and to apologise, I’d like to sacrifice the most important thing in my life: my beautiful, award-winning, world-famous hair.” He continued dramatically, “That’s right, I’m shaving it off. Send in the barber.”
To add to the comedic moment, a barber was brought on set equipped with hair clippers. As the barber prepared to shave Jost’s hair, Che intervened, exclaiming in concern, “You were really going to do it?” After a moment of hesitation, Jost confessed, “I was so scared,” leading to laughter from the audience and his co-host.
However, the real surprise came during the end credits. Jost appeared alongside other cast members, including host Will Ferrell and musical guest Paul McCartney, entirely bald. His new look elicited gasps from fellow performers, who reacted with wide eyes and open mouths, clearly taken aback by the transformation.
Though Jost’s bold finale was striking, it was ultimately a clever façade created using a bald cap. The comedian has played with his looks in the past, notably in 2020 when he sported a salt-and-pepper beard as he embraced a new style during the pandemic. However, that look eventually gave way as he shaved it off for an appearance on SNL.
This wasn’t the first time Jost used humour to touch upon his personal life. In past joke swaps, he shared cheeky remarks about his wife, actress Scarlett Johansson. One notable comment referenced research on women leaving the workforce due to menopause, blending personal anecdotes with broader themes. “New research shows that millions of women leave the workforce due to menopause which means there’s only a couple of years left on my gravy train,” he humorously noted, as a photograph of Johansson played on the screen.
As Jost’s time at SNL continues, his ability to merge personal narratives with sharp comedy remains a distinctive feature that resonates with audiences. Whether embracing a striking new look or sharing playful jabs about marriage, Jost continues to engage viewers while showcasing his comedic prowess.
With the season finale successfully wrapped, fans eagerly await what surprises and new stories will emerge in the upcoming season. As for Jost, he certainly proved that he has a flair for the unexpected, leaving both audiences and cast members guessing about what he might do next.
