In a remarkable transformation of personal tragedy into advocacy, Meg Fozzard, aged 33, has channelled her harrowing experience into a mission to enhance patient safety. Fozzard’s life changed forever following a cardiac arrest in 2019, which left her with permanent brain injuries due to significant delays in the medical care she received.

The incident occurred at her home in South London when Fozzard, then 26, suffered a cardiac arrest caused by an undiagnosed heart condition. Her partner, Xander Font Freide, promptly dialled for help and was instructed by emergency services to commence CPR. However, upon arrival, paramedics allegedly misdiagnosed her condition and failed to act appropriately.
According to Fozzard, crucial mistakes were made during their assessment of her condition. Specifically, they mishandled a Lifepak defibrillator, a device designed to monitor vital signs and deliver essential electrical shocks to the heart. Instead of applying defibrillation pads, which could have restored her heart rhythm, paramedics opted for monitoring leads that were ineffective for her urgent needs.
Throughout this critical period, Fozzard reportedly endured an eight-minute delay before her heart received the necessary shock to revive it. This lapse in treatment led to a substantial lack of oxygen to her brain, resulting in debilitating and lifelong disabilities, including speech difficulties, mobility issues, chronic fatigue, and involuntary muscle spasms.
Reflecting on her ordeal, Fozzard expressed the profound emotional challenge of coming to terms with her new reality. “It’s almost impossible to find the words to describe the physical and emotional impact of trying to come to terms with what happened,” she admitted. For her, the moment of realisation in the hospital that her life would never return to normal was particularly tough to bear.
Once an active individual who would travel extensively and engage freely with friends, Fozzard now faces significant daily challenges. She relies on a wheelchair, experiences chronic fatigue, and has to navigate the complexities of communication with speech difficulties. Despite these hurdles, she is persevering in her journey to regain her independence.
Following the incident, Fozzard’s legal representatives secured a settlement that has enabled her to access essential therapeutic treatments, including speech and language therapy, physical rehabilitation, and occupational support. These services are instrumental in her ongoing recovery and quest for normalcy.
Driven by her experience, Fozzard has taken up the mantle of a disability advocate, aiming to prevent similar incidents for others. “I’ll always be upset at the care I received when I was in desperate need,” she stated. “It’s vital action is taken to improve patient safety for others.”
Responding to the incident, the London Ambulance Service expressed regret for the shortcomings in the care provided to Fozzard on that fateful day. Dr. Fenella Wrigley, the Service’s Chief Medical Officer, extended a formal apology and acknowledged the need for improvement in their operations. “In the weeks following this 999 call, we conducted a thorough review to learn the lessons that led to Ms Fozzard’s defibrillation being delayed,” she noted. The findings from this review have since been implemented to enhance future care.
Fozzard’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of prompt and accurate medical intervention in emergency situations. As she continues to advocate for change, her journey highlights not only the resilience of the human spirit but also the imperative of safeguarding patient welfare in healthcare systems.
Through her advocacy, Meg Fozzard aims to shine a light on the need for better training and protocols within emergency medical services. Her commitment to improving patient safety for others underscores her determination to ensure that her experience serves a greater purpose, turning personal tragedy into a catalyst for systemic change.
