Tragedy struck at Lake Martin, Alabama, when 24-year-old Jayden Barreto, a recent graduate from the University of Georgia, drowned after jumping from the popular Chimney Rock into the water below. Authorities confirmed Barreto’s identity on Thursday, following a distressing incident that unfolded during a celebration with friends.

The occasion was meant to be a joyous event as Barreto, originally from Columbus, Georgia, gathered with peers to mark their graduation. However, the mood quickly shifted when friends reported that after leaping from Chimney Rock, Barreto did not resurface. The incident took place on Wednesday, May 14, and emergency services were called to the scene shortly thereafter.
Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin provided insight into the tragedy, stating, “Jayden jumped off the rock, and witnesses told us he never came back up.” This led to a swift search operation involving dive teams and rescue personnel to locate the missing graduate. By 9:45 PM local time, divers successfully discovered Barreto’s body approximately 50 feet beneath the surface of the lake, amid challenging search conditions.
Montgomery Fire Rescue reported that the water in that area reaches depths of around 150 feet, meaning divers faced considerable challenges in their efforts. A statement from the fire service confirmed the complexity of the search, stating, “Crews worked alongside multiple partner agencies in a coordinated and extended search effort under challenging conditions.” Six divers were specifically deployed to meticulously search the lake during the operation.
Sheriff Franklin noted the potential dangers of jumping from such heights, explaining that landing incorrectly in the water can result in severe impact: “The jump off of Chimney Rock can be like hitting a sheet of glass from 60 feet up.” He expressed that there was nothing to indicate foul play in the incident, reiterating the belief that it was a tragic accident leading to Barreto’s drowning.
