Tragedy struck in the Maldives as five divers, including a mother and her daughter from Italy, lost their lives during a cave diving expedition. Among the deceased are Monica Montefalcone, an associate professor at the University of Genoa, and her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, who was a biomedical engineering student. The two were part of a research trip alongside Muriel Oddenino, a research fellow, and recent graduate Federico Gualtieri. The university clarified that the ill-fated diving expedition was not a component of their scientific mission. The fifth victim was identified as Gianluca Benedetti, an experienced diving instructor.
Carlo Sommacal, the husband of Montefalcone and father of Giorgia, expressed his heartbreak in an interview with an Italian television programme. He stressed his belief that an unforeseen situation must have arisen during their dive, urging that his wife would never have jeopardised the safety of their daughter or any of the other divers. “My only certainty is that my wife is one of the best scuba divers on the face of the earth,” he said, reflecting the family’s profound trust in her expertise.
Despite search and recovery efforts, only one body has been retrieved from the underwater cave so far. Rescue personnel are working under challenging conditions, having temporarily suspended operations due to adverse weather. They anticipate resuming their efforts as soon as the seas become calmer. Authorities remain hopeful that the remaining bodies are still within the vicinity of the dive site.
In a statement released on May 15, the Italian foreign ministry reassured that there were 20 other Italian nationals present on the same day; however, they did not participate in the dive and are reportedly safe.
