A Kentucky family is celebrating a milestone moment as they welcome home their baby boy after a prolonged stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Savannah Jones, a mother of two, experienced an emotional reunion on Mother’s Day when she finally brought her son, Colsen, back to their home after an incredible 431 days in hospital care.

Colsen was born prematurely at just 24 weeks, weighing less than 1 lb. His entry into the world was fraught with challenges, which left his parents feeling uncertain about his survival. Speaking to local news outlet Lex18, Jones expressed her profound relief and joy at having Colsen finally home. “Colsen is home. After 431 days, he came home on Mother’s Day. So that was the best gift I think I’ll ever, ever get,” she said. “He’s been the best, happiest boy since he’s been home.”
The journey for the Jones family began under difficult circumstances. From March 2022, they faced numerous health hurdles as Colsen underwent several surgeries during his early life. “When this all first happened, honestly, I didn’t think Colsen was ever gonna make it out of the NICU,” Jones admitted. However, against the odds, Colsen proved to be a resilient fighter.
Now safely at home, the family is enjoying precious moments together. Remarkably, Colsen’s transition to life outside the NICU has been smooth. “We thought there would be an adjustment period with him coming home and that he would struggle, but he’s just been happy as can be,” Jones said, highlighting the joy the family has experienced since his return.
Completing their family circle, Jones also welcomed her second son while Colsen was still in care, making the homecoming an even more significant occasion. To provide a familiar environment for Colsen, the family has recreated aspects of the NICU in his new room. Jones elaborated, “He has this aquarium for bedtime. It lights up. It’s really a popular toy. I turned it on the first night, and he started kicking his legs and got excited.”
The departure from the hospital was a bittersweet experience for Jones. While she was filled with joy to finally leave the NICU with her son, she also felt a sense of loss for the support system she had come to know over the past year. “I was obviously so, so excited to leave on Sunday, but also my heart was broken because I’m like, this is our family. These are the people that we’ve spent the last 431 days with,” she reflected.
As the warmer months approach, the Jones family is looking forward to creating lasting memories together. “Our goal this summer really is just to include him and make him feel just like any other kid and have a good time,” Jones expressed. The family aims to embrace life’s simple pleasures and ensure Colsen knows the love and normalcy of family life.
