The design process drew on the talents of a close family friend, architect Elizabeth MacKenzie. Smulders expressed her admiration, stating, “I always said to myself, if I ever get lucky enough to be able to build my own home, I want her to be my architect.” MacKenzie was the first person Smulders contacted when the couple made the leap to construct their dream property.

The expansive interior features an impressive dining table that can accommodate up to 27 people, along with a spacious six-bed bunk room ideal for visits from extended family and friends. Highlights of the home include a striking aged steel staircase that enhances the foyer’s aesthetics while emphasising the high ceilings and large windows that provide breathtaking views of the landscape outside. The design also features a rustic exterior, combining a raw steel roof with olive green wood-panelled siding, creating a harmonious blend with its natural surroundings.
Reflecting on her experiences since the cabin’s completion, Smulders described last summer as the first time her family could truly enjoy the property together. “It was heaven,” she recalled, expressing her deep satisfaction with the solace and beauty that the cabin provides. Her enthusiasm for the cabin is reflected in her eagerness to share it with others, stating, “I can’t believe I live there. That’s probably why I’m inviting everyone I know to come and visit.”
