A high school in New York is marking a remarkable achievement with 21 students from the Class of 2026 being named valedictorians after all maintained an outstanding A+ average throughout their schooling. Jericho High School, located in Nassau County on Long Island, has previously been recognised as the top non-magnet and non-charter public school in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Founded in a tradition of academic excellence, Jericho High School has consistently produced high-achieving graduates. This year’s record number of valedictorians has drawn attention to the exceptional talent and dedication present within the school community. Co-principal Brian Cummings expressed pride in the achievements of the students, saying, “Each student has accomplished an A+ average, signifying their hard work and commitment in every class.”
Cummings elaborated on the grading system, noting that while slight differences in grades may seem trivial, the school’s policy reflects their standards of academic excellence. “Historically, this is how we’ve approached letter grades,” he stated, underscoreing the importance of educators creating a meritocratic environment where each student can shine, regardless of their academic pathway.
Superintendent Robert Kravitz emphasised the significance of equity in the school system, stating that students who do not take advanced placement courses still have opportunities to excel. “It’s about providing all students the chance to be recognised as scholars,” he mentioned, highlighting the inclusive nature of Jericho High School’s academic programme.
This year’s valedictorians have not shied away from rigorous coursework. Andrew Han, one of the 21 students, indicated a keen interest in subjects such as AP Economics and AP Government. He chose these classes not only for personal interest but also to demonstrate to future colleges his willingness to embrace academic challenges. Han is set to continue his education at Yale University in the autumn.
Riya Shah, another valedictorian, reflected on the demanding nature of their studies, recalling nights spent questioning her commitment to her workload. However, she and others ultimately persevered, balancing their academic achievements with participation in sports, clubs, and community service. Fellow valedictorian Harnoor Joneja shared her initiative, “Empower Her Health,” which aims to combat period poverty by providing free menstrual products and educating girls about their health.
Despite the intense competition often associated with high-achieving students, there is a collaborative spirit among this year’s valedictorians. Liv Akiva spoke about working together with her peers, acknowledging that though they may not have had all classes together, they’ve collaborated on various projects throughout their high school years.
Amneet Kaur, who aspires to pursue law, underscored the importance of a solid support system in achieving their individual and collective goals. Tommy Yuan echoed this sentiment, highlighting the balance between competition and collaboration that has characterised their year.
As the graduation ceremony approaches, school administrators are faced with the challenge of properly honouring all 21 valedictorians. Cummings noted, “We are creating a unique way to celebrate their achievements.” This includes students donning sashes that designate them as valedictorians, and they will also be prioritised in the procession at the commencement ceremony. Furthermore, plans are underway to produce a video that will showcase their remarkable accomplishments to the broader community.
The celebration of this unprecedented number of valedictorians is seen as an acknowledgment of hard work and dedication. Superintendent Kravitz stated, “Recognising their achievements is vital. We should celebrate the efforts of all our students, as they illustrate a commitment to their education.” The previous high at Jericho High School was 15 valedictorians, marking this year as a notable milestone for the institution.
